Should I negotiate at a startup as an intern?

So prior to sending my offer letter, this well funded (and I mean really well funded) startup asked what my salary expectations were. I declined to answer so they gave me $35/hr, as well as a 1k/month housing stipend that wouldn't cover a studio apartment in the area. On Glassdoor, there are 2 reports of SW interns getting $44/hr, but I'm in HW and also not sure how accurate that is. Should I negotiate? What would be reasonable? I have other final round interviews but no offers. I was thinking about asking for $39 - $42/hr, as well as an extra $500 a month for housing. They wouldn't get offended if I asked to negotiate right?

How big is this startup? As in how many people? Usually you want to always negotiate but small (even well funded startups) could be heavily dependent on their CEO. If you somehow offend the ceo they could withdraw the offer. That being said I’ve worked at tiny startups and even if the CEO was offended a bit (they asked for how much? Why don’t they believe in our mission. 🙄), he’s never withdrawn an offer. I think the risk might be if they only have one req open and had another candidate they’re willing to switch it to.

More than 700 people across multiple locations. I guess they are considered a "unicorn" (valued > 1B). My recruiter said she got "extremely positive" feedback from my interviewers, so I think that would make them less likely to dump me and switch to the next candidate right?

Oh then f yeah negotiate!! Most of the time they’d think you’re a better candidate if you negotiate. :) since it means you’re smart and willing to get what you want. Obviously be respectful but I doubt a large company would dump you for asking for a little more. I was thinking like 6-20 people lol with 10 mil in funding.

Doesn’t matter if it’s “only X months”. Don’t undersell yourself. Yes I would push for $44... even if that gets you $40 it’s still better than $35 obviously.

Do you think going from 35 to 44 without competing offers is a little risky? TBH, it would make sense SW gets compensated a little better just because that's what every SW company offers. I'm afraid if I shoot too high they'll be like "oh there's no way we can do that, next"

My 2 cents .....for a 3 month internship not worth negotiating the hourly, but make the case that the COL is high and the stipend should be much bigger and get your raise that way. Then you dont sound greedy

dude you’re an intern, how much do you expect to receive? what can you offer in return? what are they paying you for? what skills do you have?

Northrop Grumman Lambda2 Nov 4, 2019

He expects $44.... like the others reported on Glassdoor... did you read post? That’s a pretty fair goal.

I am sure it is dependent on the type of internship role and in what department, not all interns are equal

I’d ask for bump in hourly wage or double the hosing stipend to accommodate COL
