My team is incompetent and my manager is one of the worst people I’ve ever met. For context, my team was mainly hired with a bunch of people new to role so there’s been alot of issues. Our team compares horribly to other teams in our region(numbers wise…all the numbers lol). However, I really like the job itself and the company as a whole. I’ve been trying to switch teams for months but my manager is actively blocking any lateral transfers and promotions that have come my way. If I was bad my job, I would get it but I’m literally the most efficient and organized on the team. I rarely make miss on anything and if I do it’s minor. I think it might be age discrimination because I’m also the youngest on the team and I’ve heard some of my team talking about how they don’t want to see someone younger than them be more successful(not that I’m successful) but I’m the most financially stable. Ex. Some coworkers live paycheck to paycheck due to family and can’t move for opportunities due to family so it keeps them from growing. I don’t have those things so I invest my money instead. So the age discrimination thing noteworthy for context. But regardless, I think my manager is trying to push me out of Amazon and I can’t really report them because I have no proof. When they said they weren’t going to approve any promotions they said it in person and surely my next promotion was blocked. I’m in a non-tech role but no team will take me because of whatever she’s saying to them. Should I just leave or is there another path I’m not seeing? Update: I quit😭
So everyone around you sucks and you are the only one great at your job? The thing is unless you are an LE, you should be able to move internally.
Pretty much, my team was mainly hired as a bunch of people new to role so there’s been alot of issues
How was your manager’s employee survey report? (Pulse or whatever you call at Amazon)
How did your manager block you? Send the evidence to HR or skip manager.
I really don’t have much evidence because no hiring manager is willing to tell me what was said. They just tell me to talk to my manager for more information and then I get no information from my manager
Yeah this is common. Current manager is the first person I go to when considering a new hire. Right or wrong, if the feedback is bad you’re most likely not getting the next role. Your current manager could be blocking you because they can’t afford to lose you. I’d have a pretty frank conversation with them on what you need to do to be ready for the next role and agree to a timeline. Bring their skip into the discussion as well.
Manager can’t block you. If you get an offer from another team the only thing that can block the transfer is if you’re in Focus. Also what makes you think you’re the best one on the team and what evidence do you have that you’re being discriminated against due to being young. To me this sounds like a troll post, or a lot of context is left out or you’re just delusional about your actual performance and looking to blame someone.
Managers can block you. Every interview and coffee chat for me resulted in “Okay, everything looks good I just need to reach out to your manager before we proceed”. Also my rating was the best. It’s not a troll post my team is literal garbage… it’s alarming. Our regional ratings have been on the bottom for months
I don’t know about Amazon specifically but bad managers definitely can and will block you, especially if they have bad enough rep that they won’t be able to easily replace you. Meta has some good managers, but mostly sociopath empire builders.
How long have you been there? How does your team feel about your manager? When you say “my team is incompetent” makes you sound arrogant, however, they might just know how to play the corporate game well. Also, age discrimination is a thing but could you be insecure? I’ve been the youngest and oldest before, and I did feel the gap. But I tried my best to adjust for my own personal comfort. If you hate it that much, seek a new job. If you get paid well and you can hang on, I would save money for now. Then slowly start to find a new job or wait until your manager leaves. The only thing you shouldn’t do is talk bad about them or become the toxic coworker.
I’ve been on the team for 7 months and they’re scared of her. Literally our new hire what crying everyday the first week and said she was going to admit herself. I’ve heard my team talking about how they don’t want to see someone younger doing better than them(not sure why they said that in front of me but I figure it’s something to take in account)
Time to interview for another company op. Was in the same situation where I had a toxic manager. Jumping to meta now
Lol you’re in for a sad surprise if you’re expecting better from meta
As long as my manager doesn’t deny my pto and verbally assault me for not doing amazon internal KNET brainwashing videos then i will be fine. My ex manager at amazon denied my pto couple times
Yeah it’s really unfortunate when you get a garbage manager. Switch teams/managers if you can, or else time for a new job. Don’t waste even 6 months of your career with a crap manager that won’t coach or advocate for you.
When you brought up ageism, you lost all sympathy. You’re toxic too, stay where you are.
I’ve literally heard my team talking about how they don’t want to see someone younger doing better than them(not sure why they said that in front of me but I figure it’s something to take in account)
Wdym “they WANT to see someone younger doing better than them”? You said that twice.. how is that a bad thing?
Feels like a troll post
It’s not…
