Current tc: 600k (including 400k paper money after appreciation) Offer from facebook: 425k I live in sf, so Stripe is just 20 minutes commute. However, I feel that there is no learning and growth. Culture, food and people are outstanding but engineering and talent is mediocre at best (ruby tech stack, mongodb with no transactions, unreliable testing, most people in their first job after college so haven't seen better architecture at bigger companies). And work is boring for the most part. I've recently been thinking of quitting in favor of learning and growth but staying so far for TC and shorter commute. Should I take a 175k/yr pay cut to continue learning and growing or stay and enjoy life as it is? Please comment your rationale. Yoe: 10, was at Google before.
That’s disappointing to hear about stripe. From everything I’ve heard it sounded like an awesome place with great tech and challenging work.
Stripe is the darling of VC though if you ask devs on the street or in infra circles, it actually has a very mediocre to bad rep. I heard multiple times exactly what OP describes. My guess is it’s one of those places over staffed by 100% and pretty haphazardly run internally.
Great engineering culture and friendly people but subpar engineering and talent.
You mean at Stripe or fb?
What level? Too high for E5 and too low for E6.
E5
It’s not a pay cut if it’s paper money. My tc was 500k as well when it was paper money.
So did it end up being more than or less than 500k after IPO?
I think Stripe has pretty solid chances but I thought the same about Airbnb too.
Can you take $175K pay cut? if work is the issue is go for a side hustle or build your own company in the background. You can't ignore that you can retire much faster at your current rate. You have a good problem to have in a time when people are struggling to find jobs.
The money is paper, OP isn’t using it to survive.
What us paper money?
RSU/Equity held in a private company
How long have you been at Stripe for? Do you already have some shares/options exercised? Are you OK with the amount of paper money you've accumulated so far? Are you OK with parting with the invested ones? Do you think you'll grow further with FB? If so, and your focus is on better short-term pay, then pivot.
Take the jump. Life is short, happiness matters.
