I have been working in microsoft for two years. Last year I got promoted, and by microsoft standards I will not promoted to the next level until next year august or later. My previous manager used to not give any clarity on growth and opportunities for the next level. Recently, I was moved to a new team. My new manager seems quite supportive about my career growth and is also increasing my charter to get more visibility. Before the switch, I had started interviewing with a few companies and I have an offer from Google at a slightly higher level and pay (at par with the next level at Microsoft). Concern I have is the current product I am in is quite aligned with what I like to do as a PM, while Google product is more technical and might not provide enough options to play around as a PM (comes from my learnings of technical product team in MS - might not be the case everywhere). Also I am worried what if the new manager doesn’t care about my growth like my last manager. Should I switch or wait for a year to get promoted to the next level if at all?
PM fearful of “technical” matters but wants to work for a tech company 🤣
There is a difference between Product management and Technical product management. You think I could survive in MS or even get a job here without being “technical”? And every PM can has his or her own strengths I think mine is B2C customer experience. Imo that’s okay.
Hey OP I’m at Microsoft as well and want to move into PM role. I’m looking to interview and make a move in the next few months can I dm you and get a better idea of your experience with Google?
Sure.
Microsoft has like double the levels as everyone else. I would factor that part out. Pick the job that will setup your long term career the best. Where you could learn the most or have the most impact.
Where are you right now?
At home
How do you deal with technical Products at MS such as Azure??
My colleagues who work in these products have mentioned that as a PM they get very less scope of experimenting new ideas and engineering gets the most say. That’s another reason why I mentioned about my dilemma for joining the team in Google.
I assume the same. A core tech product limits PM of experimenting and even newer breakthroughs will always be engineering driven leaving a Product Manager to be more of Project Manager
Doesn't Google hold offers for one year?
If so, just see how it goes at current role and if they don't pan out , then accept the job in a year
