Solutions Engineer at Spotify will pay around $110-125k, i’m currently paid $130k as a backend engineer in my local tech company here in Singapore. Should I go for it? Pros and cons in my mind Solutions engineer Pros - More variety in job scope - Able to meet more people and expose myself in a broader manner - Name brand of Spotify Neutral - No longer as technical Cons - Lower pay - Spotify doesn’t seem to be profitable, worried I might get laid off - Bad WLB, Manager would be in US Backend Engineer at Local Tech Firm Pros - I am known within my peers and have a good reputation - Manager is great - WLB is good Cons - Company stock is down -80% now - Team is losing scope - Company has more people leaving than people joining - Work is getting boring and tedious YOE: 4 TC as above in SGD
Maybe find a backend engineer job somewhere else and use your experience to make more money?
Possible, part of me wants this, but leetcoding is really a pain
NO! Never
Why? Have you met anyone that has transitioned into SE?
Yes! He is throughly regretting it. Solution engineers are usually first one to let go and the entire department gets moved to WITCH companies. Please spare yourself don’t!
Don't get into solution engineering. Dead end. Go do some backend work at a different company. If you want to expose yourself to more variety of job scope, climb upto a staff level role in some bigger company
Agree, i was hoping being an SA can bring in more variety in a regular basis considering the natural movement of clients
As someone in the SE space, I wouldn't do it given your current position unless you hate coding. The main issues with SE/SA type roles are they have lower TC ceilings and there are a lot less companies that need them.
Thanks for the insight, I definitely don’t hate coding, the smaller pool of employers is definitely something I didn’t consider.
Only companies with software complex enough to justify the additional SE payroll burden during the sales cycle has them. Most companies would rather not have the extra expense as it's a support role to sales. Sales guys don't have the skills to do it, and engineers don't want to sit in meetings all day.
Stay in shopee
No, solution engg works on a specific customer problems and most of them are not very technical
Thanks, I’m actually okay with it being non-technical, as long as I’m bringing value
It's the question of long term goals , not short term
