Today: L5 iOS at Block. TC about 248k. Offer was for 300k total but stock has only dropped since I joined. My team has gotten pretty toxic amid the Block layoffs and reorgs; manager can't really do anything about it. Day to day sucks and it's affecting my mental health. Working here feels like sacrificing my intellectualism for the sake of a larger paycheck than my last gig. Great signal from all the folks I talked to at Disney+ who I'd be working with. They seemed to know their stuff and were an order of magnitude nicer than the people I work with at Block. Using regular and modern tech like SwiftUI (w/ UIKit navigation), async/await, all the stuff Block hasn't adopted yet due to being pigeonholed by bad infrastructure. I'd be in a lead role and get to mentor some junior engineers, something I've missed doing since I joined Block and work w/ a team of only senior+ who never want to actually work together. The only thing is the TC was lower than expected after a few rounds of negotiation. Role: P3 (Disney senior) SWE Base 165k Sign-on stonk grant: 180k Annual LTI RSUs: 35% of salary Potential bonus: 7% About 270k after calculating everything w/ vesting schedules, etc. Currently remote & would stay remote in LCOL city. YOE: 6 Feels kinda annoying to be taking a theoretical pay cut (but in actuality a small raise). Always been a fan of the brand and seems like a good opportunity. Fringe benefits like park admission sound nice but TBH an annual pass isn't crazy expensive on its own. Feeling too burned out by Block uncertainty + bad team to stay here much longer. I bet I could 2x TC w/ something like Netflix, but also have wanted to work for Disney since I was little. I also just don't want to be here any longer while l potentially keep looking. All in all everything sounds great aside from lower than expected TC. Can't really put a price on mental health I guess. What do you all think? Thank you for your perspective. #engineering #swe #software #iOS
See if you can negotiate for more. Honestly, if you’re not happy where you are at, it’s a good signal to move on. The pay range is close enough to where it really wouldn’t matter for your day-to-day
take it and work both jobs lol
Honestly Block's work pace is so glacial that I probably could. I have way too bad anxiety to pull off double employment though haha
You are done with Block anyway and be happier that is valuable too
Can I ask for a referral for Block before you leave , I am also in mobile with 3 yoe and my company is gonna lay me off in 2 weeks 🥲
I’ve heard good things about Disney’s engineering culture
Like?
Is Disney remote though?
How much is sign on bonus?
Hey I found a role that matches my background exactly can I dm you?
Sure
Congrats, it's very difficult to get remote right now so you must've interviewed well. The LTI and bonus amounts are standardized per level so no negotiation there and they're generally pretty stingy on base, especially if you're in a LCOL so the offer seems solid for a P3. It sounds like you're burned out and ready for a change and it's a good offer so I'd say take it if you don't have any other promising interviews. It's a known brand with fun IP and probably a good stop for a couple of years. That said, despite what some may say, this is not a technology company and leadership does not "get" or value technology and what it means to build high quality software. The only metric that matters is hitting dates and shipping features. Dates are often determined without consulting engineering and different stakeholders and dependencies often do not talk beforehand resulting in more waterfall operations of backing into dates and cutting scope than agile. This of course varies team by team and brand by brand as it's a very large company. D+ is very much the shiny object so you'll get most of the attention, support, budget, and of course stress. It's a decent job with solid compensation, but you will very much feel like a cog in a massive machine and grow frustrated with the decisions of top heavy senior leadership. Also, promotions are extremely difficult. Without saying too much more I work in a closely related area so feel free to DM with any questions.
Exactly. We do no retros or planning. Manager comes to us with projects and deadlines. No transparency. So much tech debt, nobody makes sure code is written in a sustainable way and on calls are well equipped. So very old school. Management and ICs aren’t excited at all.
So wlb is great obviously, I guess that with the brand name, that’s why people stick around.
Have you considered what if you get laid off at Disney? What if it’s safer at Block? You made it past the recent RIF already. Are you at Square or Cash?
