I'm an L5 at AWS and I'll join Uber as a senior dev mid Feb. Normally I'd tell my manager and give my resignation (setting leave date to mid Feb) as soon as I accepted the offer so that they can start looking for someone to replace me. However due to market conditions I'm reluctant to do so and I consider letting them know only few weeks before I leave. Here are a few things I thought - Don't tell; even if I tell them they cannot look for someone due to hiring freeze. - Don't tell; there is chance that Uber might rescind offer. - Tell them; if Amazon starts laying off people, my manager can put my name in the list instead of unwillingly laying off someone else. This way, even there is chance I might get severance package. Old TC: $233K New TC: $430K
I’d wait to tell given the current market conditions. The carrot of a severance is too risky. Also depends on your relationship with your manager. If you’re a decent performer he may anyway not be able to justify picking you. Also unlikely that your manager will have much say if the time comes.
If Meta can kick bootcampers, why you think Uber cannot rescind the offer? Tell them on Friday before calling it a day. Look after yourself, for no one else will
Surprised that Uber is still hiring. Which org is the offer for? I would suggest the same industry standard of 2 weeks and I'm sure your manager would understand given the market conditions
They are definitely still hiring, but not a ton of openings. I did team matching for Uber a couple weeks ago and the only team I had the option to speak with was some team involved with Maps
Setting the market condition aside, what possible reason do you have to not follow the standard 2 week notice? The premise behind this question doesn't make sense
I litteraly said "so that they can start looking for someone to replace me"
Ok, I'm saying that is against your interests in every possible way. If your prospective employer rescinds your offer for whatever reason, then you just screwed yourself up in a major way.
You should only tell your manager 2 weeks in advance regardless of market condition.
Lol
Fat
Tell as early as possible.
With that 2x difference in TC, why are you even waiting till Feb? Look after your interests first But if you want to do that, the best idea would be to juat give 2 weeks notice
I've got unused paternity leave and had planned a 6 weeks holiday from christmas to end of Jan long ago.
Going for snr SWE and you still sound like a rookie?
Two weeks notice is industry standard
Imagine you gave two weeks notice then got pipped or laid off immediately and one week later Uber offer rescinded due to hiring freeze
With that kind of luck, he'll probably get hit by a meteorite next 😄
