For the purposes of this poll I am speaking about abolishing CA alimony via a ballot initiative. This is NOT about child support, only alimony. Pros: It is frequently abused as an excuse to not work It typically is applied more beneficially to women than men It could be considered slavery for the payee Alimony is a form of debt that never goes away like student loans Cons: Women who make less money than their husband will lose their lifestyle after divorce Feminists lawyers believe that higher earning men should pay a fee for the inequity they feel women endure in a marriage The number of state welfare recipients may increase
If we abolish it no one is going to marry us nerds. If no one is going to marry rich guy that would take away motivation to make money or start a startup. 😂😂 no startup no job.
I’m sure living in a mansion is a meaningful incentive. In fact, with gold diggers forced to steady, entrepreneurs could focus on even more wealth creation. If Elon didn’t keep getting divorced, we would be on the moon by now.
People just need to learn to write a custom prenup instead of using the default
The whole racket behind alimony is that would keep more people away from claiming state support and when you pay alimony the state take a cut and pay it to your wife. You don’t directly pay the wife.
Not any longer, check recent legislation
Just do not marry, that's simple
Until men can carry the children or always choose not to have children, this is shitty. So many women become domestic slaves who just clean the house and tend the kids, and then are unhireable for at least a couple years while the kids are young. So yes, the person that inseminated them should fucking pay for it. After 5-10 years alimony should cease.
It should never have existed to begin with. Slavery is illegal in the USA and has been in every state for over 150 years.
Just don’t get married. Problem solved.
Your logic of selection for marriage is reasonable. But I highly double your argument about gender neutral. IMO, the law is absolutely not gender neutral, as not only I read law myself, but also I see cases and how law is practiced. While the law was male-biased centuries ago, now the law is female-biased.
Men have no other option because women tend to be less ambitious. I was raised to believe I should only settle down with an equal, but I can't find any. The only women who come close are either dating/marrying millionaires (so much for sticking with an equal) or have abhorrent personalities.
My mother's best friend pays lifetime alimony to her ex husband with multiple disabilities. Even though she moved away from the USA 20 years ago. I think it is fair since he was raising the kids and she was the only one working. He would have been left homeless otherwise.
I think it is wrong for her to be forced to pay this number
She is a millionaire.
Just had to give it a sexist touch didn't ya? Could've been an actual meaningful conversation smh.
The entire application of this law discriminates against men so no way to avoid gendered arguments here.
