Sick of Trump politics , constant news, constant disruption and hustle and having to deliver and iterate something constantly due to short Agile sprints . Sick of job hunting , interviewing and leetcoding. Sick of nagging wife and the dog too. I often dream of working at a coffee shop in Portland or Bellingham and have no technology and no interaction with people I already know . Often daydream at work of what if I had not become a software engineer. What should I do? TC - 170, currently at AMZN
When was the last time you went on a vacation?
Unsubscribe from politics on Blind, block Antialy2, don’t go on facebook/instagram/read news. Use LinkedIn and enjoy those motivational and inspirational posts. It’s politic-free (most of the time).
No, not the dog ... everything else is sickening ... but not 🐕
Don't work in a coffee shop in Portland and expect to be able to support yourself. Cost of living is ludicrous (within the city, less so in the outlying suburbs), Trump politics is the general conversation most everywhere you go, and when you want money you'll find yourself back in SE. As for software engineering, it's good money. Money can't buy happiness, but it's a helluva lot easier to be happy when you're not one of the poors (compared to software folk, I'm one of the poors). You've hit a low point. Get a therapist, do some couples counseling, and get your head straight. You're probably running up on burnout. If you're in a good position, find a lower-paying job that won't be a constant sprint and coast for awhile. But get your head straight first. You need to be able to think clearly.
Take a vacation and travel to a country you have never been there. Don't bring wife and the dog. Good luck man
How many hours are you working in a week? Might consider a long vacation. I really don't like being at the office, but I don't hate it and it pays the bills. But, in all honesty I try to get away with as little time investment as possible. I show up at 9'ish, attend a few meetings, get some work done as fast as possible, go to the gym, or go skateboard, come back for a couple meetings and leave around 3:30 latest. Sometimes I get really busy with stuff but usually do some non-meeting work at home, on the couch. I try to not treat my weekdays like I'm just using them to work. Otherwise I would go crazy. We're not meant to be at an office all day just to go home and get a couple hours in before bed. It's seriously not worth the money to me if I didn't have this kind of balance.
Please take a break and travel or do some shit which you enjoy the most.
Make a change, life is too short.
Block Atinlay2 on here that way you don't have to see his stupid posts of Trump
You must be fun at parties. Try therapy.
At parties I just smoke herb, drink beer and play poker . That’s a lot of fun . Thanks for the therapy tip.
Don't mind this guy OP, the "you must be fun at parties" quip is the most generic lazy response to ever exist
