Sign R-88 to vote on equality in Washington state

Jun 21, 2019 73 Comments

TLDR: we need 130k valid signatures from registered voters of WA, to put an important bill back into November's ballot. Everyone can help even if you don't live in WA.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

An important referendum measure (R-88) is underway to allow Washingtonians to vote on the issue of discrimination and equality. In order for R-88 to qualify for the November ballot, it needs to gather 130K valid signatures by 7/27. I believe this is an issue that everyone should know about.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?
In 1998 more than 58% of the voters supported a ballot measure (I-200) that barred the state from “discriminating or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in public employment, education and contracting.”

On 4/28/2019, the last night of the legislative session, the WA state legislature replaced I-200 with I-1000, which reinstates identity markers, such as race, sex, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, to be used in public education, hiring and government contracting. In response, a group of Washingtonians filed R-88 in order to put this issue back into the hands of voters. See details here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FLy4Y9J7LA

HOW CAN I HELP?
1. All Registered Washington voters: Sign R-88 by 7/15 at 88 Kirkland Salon (88 Kirkland Ave
Kirkland WA 98033) during business hours (9:00 AM - 7:00 PM except Sundays) or find a map of signing locations on LetPeopleVote.org/signing-location/. You can also send your office building location to signr88g@gmail.com to be connected with a volunteer or signing meet up all over Washington state.

2. All Citizens and Permanent Residents: Donate at LetPeopleVote.org/donate/. All donations will be used towards signature gathering.

3. Everyone anywhere (visa holders included):
Volunteer by spreading the word and picking up an official R-88 form to collect signatures! This is a true grass root effort!

WHAT DOES MY SIGNATURE MEAN?
Signing R-88 is neither a vote in favor of nor against I-1000. It is a vote to let the people of Washington decide the issue by putting I-1000 onto the November ballot.

Sincerely,
A Concerned Washingtonian

Good. About time someone stood up for equality. Affirmative action perpetuates stereotypes, we don't want it in Washington.

No I have interviewed hundreds of times in fb and attended quite a lot debrief meetings, i am sure we are not biased to any race or gender. We may bias to people from rich family because they had better education and eventually perform better. That is different from being a racist. I support better public education and better chance for poor kids, but better chance for some races? No, that’s racism. The process is broken because there are racists in the country. And some of those racists brought up I-1000, to legalize racism and want to treat people differently based on race.

Btw., I grew up dirt poor. As in sometimes did not have enough money for bread and on good years had bananas or oranges for Christmas. That didn’t stop me, on the contrary it motivated as it was clear bot tho me and my parents that education is the only way to escape that severe poverty. I’m all for trying to help the less fortunate have a better chance at life through education regardless of race or other traits. But I don’t agree with favoring or penalizing anyone for their immutable traits.

That's awesome you've been able to achieve upward mobility! So how do you fix something that is obviously broken? If we flipped a coin and it ends up on heads 500 times in a row in theory I could argue that with every flip there is a 50% chance of tails but wouldn't you be suspicious? That to me is where we are at today. We have basic rules discrimination but in reality the outcomes are stil so far out of whack that clearly it's not working. The playing field may be level but perhaps many are unable to even make it to the field. How do we fix that?

The answer is you try to debug the process and see where it’s breaking down and fix the root cause. You shouldn’t throw something on top to just massage the results you don’t like without understanding the underlying cause. Is it a pipeline problem (eg not enough people from subgroup X get a degree in Foo)? Or is it that they are not considered for interviews at all, or they make it to the interview stage but don’t get the job? Basically gather data at each stage of the funnel and understanding if and where there’s a problem.

Sure, sounds great. Who is going to do that? Unfortunately with society it's going to also be all of the above. Decades of media, stereotypes, unconcious bias, etc. If you go and ask that board full of men why they don't have any women do you think they will pinpoint why?

Many visa holders children are US citizens and this new law reinforces racial discrimination in public education from first grade. My kids education is the only reason why I care about it. Just became a citizen recently and donated $2000!

Then go online and donate! The R88 campaign has hired professional signature gatherers in addition to volunteers - that is the only way to meet the signature requirements. But signatures cost money.

Also share on social media and ask all of your friends to donate! I pinged every person on my contact list and raised $4000 last week.

I find many people (especially white people) afraid of talking about it, or you are labeled a racist or white supremacy. It is time that we all talk about it and take some action!

  • This is America. There is literally so much opportunity to be had. I went from making $7.25/hr to $40/hr with no degree. Hard work and dedication are the parents of possibility.

      OP
The "let people vote" in this context only means "let people vote on I1000 instead of letting legislators pass it silently". They already passed I1000, so unless we get enough signatures and put it back in to Novembers ballot, you won't have a chance to vote about it. So please at least provide your signature, by:
      1) Sign R-88 by 7/15 at 88 Kirkland Salon (88 Kirkland Ave Kirkland WA 98033) during business hours (9:00 AM - 7:00 PM except Sundays)
      2) Or find a map of signing locations on LetPeopleVote.org/signing-location/.
      3) You can also send your location to signr88g@gmail.com to be connected with a volunteer or signing meet up all over Washington state.

I can’t speak for the current overall status. My very anecdotal observation is that there are only 4 weeks left and the majority of the white people who are supportive of R-88 are still afraid of speaking up. Things have to be done secretly - donations are made in spouses name, signatures are provided via snail mail, no one talks about it on social media because it is not PC... it is so sad.

There's no discussion of it at all on the various discussion groups at Amazon. Anyone who brings it up would be feathered and tarred. Meanwhile people collecting signatures for climate change or board diversity have no problems blasting out their petitions company wide.
