Does anyone know if there are Singaporean companies/ Startups that pay well? (Outside of Google and Facebook) #singapore
None, even Google low balls in Singapore. Its one of the most underpaid (while being expensive) destinations for tech guys. Dont forget to do a purchasing power parity salary conversion before accepting an offer. The country is just a small spot and imports everything hence very high costs of living. Hawker centers dish out tasty but very unhealthy food.
singapore having a high cost of living is a myth. first consider almost no income tax. then move out of the downtown into the hdb apartments on the west side of the island. commute wont be bad due to cheap MRT (train system). It's only unaffordable if you want to live downtown.
and not all cheap hawker centre food is unhealthy and groceries are cheap too
singapore just a cost center to global tech bruhh. Majority only sales + marketing based here. No product nor engineering except for maybe google, stripe. Pay for swe is definitely decent but pales in comparison to the US. Only in Singapore investment banking and consulting is paid more than swe. Ofc I'm just over generalising
Probably Grab, startups and finance
No, Singapore is pretty standardized everyone stays in a salary band. Not much increments even if you manage to switch.
I think the consensus in this thread so far is that Singapore is not a good place for tech jobs, and has a high cost of living, and I agree.
Don't lower taxes offset the high cost of living?
Far far from it. I think the basic idea is that the amount of money you can save each month (after tax) in Singapore is far far less than the amount of money you can save in the US doing the same job, while having a much higher quality of life in the US.
There are many tech companies and offices in Singapore. I feel the best pays in the tech industry are still paid by the American tech company, like google, fb, etc. Or by the government, like GovTech.
Thanks for the insights. Sadly, I am an overseas Singaporean who probably want to come back in 2 to 3 years. Seems like Tech in Sg is rather underpaid even compared to Europe
Salaries are much better in Singapore than in Europe if you join an american company.
Just for context, if say you can make 130K sgd per year in Singapore, then I can say that I can save over 130K sgd doing the same job in the US (after tax). If you want to work in Singapore, it will not be for the money, period.
Are you saying you would be able to save the whole amount that you would make in total in Singapore? How much would you need to make in in the US in to save that amount? (Assuming Bay Area or NY)
Throwing out a super rough example. 130K sgd = 96K usd Monthly spend = 8k usd Annual spend = 96k usd Annual income tax = 60K usd Total annual income = 96+96+60 = 252K usd This is not only realistic but I think many people are making more and spending less than that.
How much does Facebook pay for its E4 position?
I have heard Facebook SG pays around the same as what you would got in the US after tax? Is that accurate?
Correct
