PM is irrelevant role and will die in next 2-3 years.
I am currently a senior software engineer (L6) at Amazon who just completed a loop for a staff position at Slack. I got my loop feedback and they said they are prepared to offer me a senior position, and that I didn’t clear the bar for staff. I am a relatively newly promoted senior at Amazon so this down leveling didn’t exactly shock me, but during the the initial screening process I was told by the recruiter that the staff position at Slack maps very closely onto the senior level at Amazon. I was hoping an SDE at Slack could compare and contrast the senior vs staff roles in a little more detail so I can know what to expect if I were to come in as senior. Thanks all. TC: 290k (after stock collapse)
What was the Slack senior offer?
Haven’t gotten the formal offer yet. I have the call with the hiring manager next week so we’ll see what shakes out after that.
Hey OP, I’m in final rounds for a Staff level role at Slack too. Do you have any updates?
Recruiter says something doesn’t mean shit… interview process matter more.
We’re hiring?
Personally speaking, Senior and Staff levels are ambiguous. I know plenty of seniors that perform and drive similar (if not more) impact than staff. If possible push for staff.
You are leveled correctly
Yea I don’t disagree it’s probably the appropriate leveling at all. I was just more curious how these two roles operate within the company in contrast to each other. For example, I currently am very familiar with the expectations of the senior vs principal levels at Amazon and was curious of how senior vs staff contrasted within slack. I have a call with the hiring manager next week and will be asking this during that meeting as well but was hoping to get some input from current SDEs at slack as well.
