What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I am considering joining Snap as an engineer. Looks like there is a good opportunity for career growth. The equity part of the offer can be good even after considering a hefty drop from current price point. But I am not sure about the work culture. Do anyone know how is the work culture here? Is it cut throat ? How strong is negative politics? Do people feel safe in general? How is the work life balance ? Thanks.
Are you moving to Snap to use Google Cloud? You dying to write AppEngine?
bad move
Hr sucks, manager seems to be nice but I turned down their offer 2 ys back
@OP. why leave Google ?
They are offering me a level higher. Mostly the career growth prospect and money. The offer is huge specially at current stock price (assuming it does not go down another 50%)
That's a big assumption.
I turned down their offer an year ago...mostly turned down since did not want to move to LA unless snapchat was really appealing to me for career prospects...twitter with their ridiculously awesome engineering could not move move a needle when it comes to making money then why would you bet on snapchat? Remember their HQ is in LA where the talent level can be questionable compared to silicon valley. Ask youself ? Do you use snapchat ? Do you love the product and believe in their mission ? I can agree that staying at google is no good than joining a small headcount company like snapchat where opportunities will be abundant for career growth but think and take decision wisely.
I dont know what to make of you. Dint you know of the fact that snapchat is in LA before following through with the interview and denying at the time of offer for the same reason. Either you are incredibly stupid or just plain lying.
Practice dude. Being a good engineer has nothing to do with passing interviews. So you gotta practice somewhere right ? Also if you understand English please read properly what I said above. After interviewing with them I could sense their talent level and the team was not appealing to me from my career point of view. If it was indeed appealing I would have gone to LA. Dont behave like your name. Even though you from Oracle you can try and be smart.
Depends on which team. Are you gonna staying in sf? Or moving down to Venice?
I have an offer for the Venice office. I am ok with relocation. I am worried that I will not excel if the culture is cut throat, let's say anywhere close to Uber.
Of course it is cut throat, in what world would a startup being run by a 25 year old not be cut throat? Think those wednesday cult meetings are to discuss work life balance? lol
Culture will mature eventually ofcourse if it survives till then...Uber is starting to mature now...FB early days it was cut throat too....
Can you share your offer?
Don't want to put too much pii here. Let's say the equity is well over 2x compared to median Facebook offer for same level.
Considering snap's vesting schedule, 2x is pretty common. An e5 I know recently joined snap with ~$1m rsu (FB median is 450k for that level)
Is google your first job? How long have you been working at google? Snap is a completely different company.
Yes google is my only job. Have been here for 7+ years. Would love to know how snap is a very different culture.
the SF office is basically Google light. Very similar culture. But the biggest difference coming from Google will be how much you can put your experience to use and contribute a lot right away. There is no 6 month learning curve and there is plenty of work to be done and not enough senior engineers to work on everything
Are you joining as an eng or non eng role?
Eng. Will update OP
Cool, if you ignore all the naysayers here : bottom line is that it's a great time to join. Culture really depends on the team: but overall there is a lot of value given to shipping product, if you can ship you will get more ownership.
