Snap vs Google down level offer?

I recently accepted a down level (and sort of lowball) offer from Google in a LCOL location, but now snap has come back with an offer that’s 70% higher in HCOL area and I’m not sure if I should take it? Both teams are fairly similar. Any insights from G or Snap folks is really appreciated. Overall I’ve been liking G but feels very political and promo to L5 will take 2 years minimum Pros of taking Snap: - $$ - Smaller company - better level (l4 at snap > l4 at G) Cons: - I might be closing the door to G in the future - Volatility of the stock - WLB (although I wouldn’t care if the work is interesting) TC: (it’s in the poll) #snap #google #tech #offer

Between prestige and money, always choose money

Lowe’s FOVq75 Dec 1, 2023

Bigger TC doesn't necessarily mean more money. 220k in a place like Kansas City is equivalent to >400k in a city like SF when taking taxes and CoL into consideration.

Cruise KCwO43 Dec 1, 2023

it’s certainly higher but i don’t think it’s like 2:1. unless you move to SF and pay like 10k/mo for some 2br which is silly.

Google zldW26 Dec 1, 2023

Depends on what matters to you. For me, work life balance in the city I live in matters more than money.

70% is massive.

Yeah but what lcol we talking here?

Two Sigma T0ad Dec 1, 2023

We’re talking about Snap though, the stock that drops 80% every time you think it’s at the bottom

Google 🦸hero Dec 1, 2023

Dumb question but how is L4 Snap > L4 Google? Is their leveling system different? L4 at G is mid level SWE.

Yah

Google MQzM44 OP Dec 1, 2023

You can also tell by the pay. L4 Snap pay in the Bay Area is more or less the same as G L5

Snapchat still exists?

Google MQzM44 OP Dec 1, 2023

Apparently it’s still a thing among youngsters

Well if they give you a lot of money and you dont need to use the app... Take the chance? :)

First, do the math on how much more you would be saving per year. Paying HCOL expenses and HCOL taxes puts a serious dent even in a 70% delta. Then you will have better data. You sound early ish in your career so I would optimize for learning and building a good reputation. You’ll earn a lot more later if you do. In general I would not leave a good employer in under a year for any reason, under two for few reasons. If your boss or environment is toxic that’s a different story, but being trustworthy is still something people care about.

I have doubts about Snap as a growth company going forward but the TC difference way too high to be brushed aside. Snap L5 promo also needs similar effort to Google L5 promo and might be more difficult due to lack of promo worthy opportunities in a soon to be stagnant company like Snap. Although Google has become stagnant, L4 to L5 promos are still gameable and are not linked to new revenue streams/new projects.

Google hoxhyfvzsx Dec 1, 2023

The effort you have to put in to getting to L5 nowadays at Google is not worth it. Since we are basically not hiring anyone, no L3 or new L4 will be joining. No people to “lead” to be promoted to L5 lol

Verizon Media sushi_cat Dec 3, 2023

That’s interesting. I was in a round for L4 role when they stopped process. Initial convo was I was overqualified after taking to HM and HR but maybe they also removed role. Why is there no more hiring of L3 and L4?

$SNAP is basically a penny stock in terms of volatility. +20% drops on earnings release day are very common. Take that into consideration as it will be almost half your compensation there based on the offer. It can be personally challenging to deal with your finances being so volatile. That said it is basically L+1 and a 70% pay bump, it would be silly to not take it.

Instacart cv_2022 Dec 1, 2023

Their base is almost as much as Google's TC.

Lowe’s FOVq75 Dec 1, 2023

Take CoL into consideration and Snap's base might be less than Google's TC

Atlassian bqOP27 Dec 1, 2023

why not both? ;)
