Seeing a lot of folks calling the demise of Snap after a series of poor earnings. But I think their future is bright. Encouragingly, they don’t have a user growth problem, and to make something clear: seeing lots of discussion surrounding TikTok vs. Snap. It’s not a zero sum game— they have entirely different use cases— one being for entertainment, the other for communication. Snap’s main issues stem from monetization (they have a lot of green space on their app they need to figure out how to make money from) and operating expenses. They’ve hired a lot of very talented people, but talent is expensive. Moreover, advertisers’ budgets aren’t growing incrementally, they’re being reallocated (at the moment), so, in that case, the likes of TikTok is partly to blame. But this isn’t a secular trend. They have a strong value prop, catering to 347M DAUs, better targeting than other platforms and are devising clever ways to improve attribution post-ATT. I work in ads and my clients tell me they love Snap. If they can improve monetization, the ads experience in general, while maintaining consistent user growth— they’ll be fine. They’re the leader in AR shopping and that’s only in its nascent stages. TC: $285k
Snap is just a glorified chat app and all of its distinctive features have already been copied into other platforms. RIP Snap
Youth engagement is the most valuable asset. They made some bad bets. They invested in professional short form video rather amateur short form video like Tiktok. Who knows if they’ll pivot fast enough to actually be profitable.
Is there a zoomer ETF? I imagine that performs pretty well
Do you understand how dumb the statement “their problem is monetization” sounds? That’s the only problem that matters here. You are basically saying “their only problem is they don’t make money”.
I’m simplifying the issue into one word. It’s not like they aren’t driving revenue growth whatsoever— they just need to do a more efficient job of it— which is entirely feasible. They’ve poached some of the best people from Amazon Ads over the years, e.g. Jeremi Gorman — but other leadership is lacking. They can right the ship
That’s nice. They are still losing money.
Nobody uses snap when there's tiktok and ig
That’s incorrect. *We* may not use Snap, but every single teenager with a cell phone does
Every kid I know doesnt use snap. Its still tiktok or ig. Snap died off 5 years ago.
“Better targeting than other platforms” that’s not true . Google and Meta are still way way ahead. Snapchat isn’t even competitive with them in that department.
I mean, yes. Okay… better targeting than *some* platforms (e.g. the one I work for lol) And I’d actually argue Amazon’s first party shopper data is one the most valuable troves out there.
The feed’s UI is horrendous. It looks straight up trashy. I’ll end at that.
Snap is still hip with the young people isn't it? Lord knows Facebook isn't 😭
Naw I don’t know any kids that use snap. It’s IG and tiktok
Naw bro you just old or dont know any teen. Everyone uses snap, at my uni of like 50k people everyone literally everyone always communicated thru snap. You think teens communicate through Ig and tiktok? Lmao what...... they send tiktoks to each other... through snap... iG is only for sliding/flirting. Other countries use whatsapp, in the U.S. its snap.
Maybe all social media is inherently not that valuable when the economy sucks
This is true — digital advertising is predicated around consumption, which obviously suffers during periods of contraction
The entire pretext of social media is is to create social awareness at the speed of light and bring people together. We as humans are social beings. Just like everything else, it has its flaws. Just like you parents and mine. All and everything is flawed. Focusing on the upside is what helps entrepreneurial thinking. What can we use it for better
Snap is for fools.
No. Snap is for cools

As long as people want to send nudes to each other, snap will exist
I just send em over iMessage
That’s the only “communication” use-case in Snap. Else who talks on snap lol
