Peaceful Protest Hasn’t Worked and Has Been Met With Aggression.
I've seen a lot of posts here from both ends of the spectrum with the main argument from folks saying H1-B is a temporary visa. Fair enough, in that case wouldn't it make sense to have a social security agreement if you really want people for a "temporary" period? Many countries have this agreement [2] with SSA which benefits these temporary workers (and others). Surprise surpise -- this doesn't have India OR China. From [1]: "It aims to protect interests of professionals of Indian-origin who contribute more than $ 1 billion each year to the US social security. Under this pact, professionals of both the countries would be exempted from social security taxes when they go to work for a short period in the other country." It is very surprising that despite all the chest-thumping by Jaishankar, Modi and the Trump visit, We cannot get a simple logical agreement b/w the US and Indian govts. While we're getting adverse H1-B and EB reforms left, right and center with the main underlying argument that it is a "temporary" visa, I wonder why this simple social agreement cannot be reached. I'm deeply sadenned, surprized perhaps that the folks who constitute the highest earning racial group in US, have very little collective bargaining ability. Work ten years in the USA, collect social security at age 62 when you are living in India. What’s the problem?
One needs to pay social security tax for 10 years in order to earn 40 credits which will make that person eligible to get social security paycheck after 62. If you are wondering where you stand now, you can create an account in ssa.gov and look at your record.
The best thing, citizenship not required and you can setup electronic deposit to your India bank account too.
Work for 10 years and you get social security benefits irrespective of citizenship.
Social security won't exist in the next few decades.
Work 10 years in USA - people who don’t manage to get a GC almost always work for a max of 6 years.

If you’re in GC queue, you stay here for the most part, renewing H1b. If you’re not in GC queue, you can’t renew H1b beyond 6 years. Very few people go back after 10 years. So in most cases, if you stay 10 years, the likelihood that you’ll use the benefits in US are high.
Modi is never in it for policy. He is in for his own interests. US tours on taxpayers money. Chest thumping in front of gullible supporters to present a strong image at an international stage. He is not capable of doing any real work. And doesn’t need to when empty marketing can get him far enough with people.
Note there are almost no developing countries in that list. Most of them, in fact, are EU states with comparable or better retirement benefits than US. Let’s be real, despite temporary idea of H1b no one plans to come back to India besides few nostalgic dreaming desis on Blind (and even they never leave). So one way or another SSA will pay benefits to these people. And probably SSI to two sets of desi parents on top of it if/when they sponsor them.
