What are the best ways to improve soft skills in dealing with real worklife scenarios? I mean we all have learned it theoretically but miss applying the principles in real life. Are some people naturally cunning or is it something acquired? Any suggestions/help is appreciated :) #careerbuilder #careerbuilder #tech #career
Realizing no one noticed you saying something weird or no one remembers or thinks about it went a long way in helping me learn to just relax a bit and not be so anxious.
Except at FB where your Manager will give you shit about it for years!
Seriously, find a new manager. That's not, ah, something to normalize?
Toastmasters
Talent is a Senior Principal engineer stealing ideas from conference and making a fool out of a team by making them work on it. That too after knowing it’s already done by someone. Top of that getting $300k for it.
Well one thing i learned from people at top and seniors in my years of work so far is that it doesn’t matter how much i myself work, its more about how much i can make juniors work and manage to take credit for it and be able to talk about it! This applies to both technical and non technical roles. “ Individual Contributor” is just a myth. :)
True.
not to forget ‘collaboration’
Check out soft skills engineering podcast.
Will you please accept these mentos? 👀 *for the uninitiated, this is an inside joke on the podcast referencing asking someone to be your mentor
+1 for that podcast too. Love the duo.
Saying and writing "thank you" , "congratulations " emails , fake appreciation even though you dont mean it repeatedly is one important soft skill needed in the industry P.s i do understand what being polite & caring is!
This! Fake appreciation is HUGE! When I actually asked not to be given "fake appreciation," my FB Mgmt had a fit!
@fireworker Same story here. When I solved an NP-complete problem in NVIDIA, and received not even a thank you, I asked my manager: where is the appreciation? His reply was that I am just doing my job, why he should thank me? When I complained higher (about other issues), he filed underperforming rating to HR. He had a very strange career: was hired as a manager without any prior management experience. This reveals an interesting picture of the US corporate culture: people who interview you and require you to have a set of perfect soft skills have none themselves. It's just a ruse to make you overwork without complaining and make their life easier.
Ass licking is a good skill to have. Most people I see succeeding are very good at manipulating, liking ass and con artists
This. If you can suck up heavily, you will have it made.
A.k.a brown nosing
Thought this thread would end up being a good one. But then, this is Blind. Mostly bullshit whining and next to no solid advice. I’ll contribute, find a mentor who has the qualities you know you need. For me the ability to not react out of emotion and hold my tongue is a valuable skill some of my Sr co-workers are helping me with.
That's great for being self-aware. How did you exactly approach colleagues for helping you on it?
Problem is most don’t know what they need.
Recommend "Managing humans" book for this
+1 I worked with Lopp at a previous job - he has a wealth of management and soft skills wisdom that everyone, not just managers, can benefit from.

Unfortunately kids on blind will laugh at this comment and feel that their leetcode skill is all they need, to make 40-50 year olds obsolete.
Unfortunately those 40-50 year Olds are also being asked leetcode questions.
