Do you feel software companies can run with much lesser people .. Always wondered how whatsapp with half a billion users was run by 35 engineers .. I definitely feel there is lot of engineers who dont contribute much and its mostly top 30% that run the ship…
easily bloated. 90% of us are working < 20 hrs per week
But then you’re too dependent on that 25%, you need to form new ppl that are not needed at first (new grad here)
At peanut factory, I was working 15 hrs a week and got 2 promotions in 4 years then left .. just saying it’s definitely bloated to me..
Shows your bootlicking skills.
Just shows I can be effective without wasting time .. if you feel everyone gets promoted by boot licking then just shows your mentality.. Its about focusing on where you get the results and doing it effectively..
Yes let’s shoot ourself in the foot
This person feels called out
You’re too young to get it, that’s why you work where you work in this climate. You think when this fancy bloated companies start trimming fat things are gonna get super rosy for course hero people.
Yep. Google could drop a huge chunk of the company for sure. Twitter could too, and did.
It is Pareto principle, 20% effort generates 80% value… You still need sometimes to cover 100%, low impactful work many times is still needed. Who do you think takes care of support? Operations? Patching? Deployments? Extending to small new use cases? How do you also mitigate risks? Let say you can have a product implemented by 1 single person that created 80% of the product… it is very risky to depend so much in only that person… you need redundancy to avoid single point of failure… salaries may even go higher if this is done.
Automation is the key .. I see lot of folks just doing busy work .. just working on something for the sake of it with very limited to no impact .. I think they key is having best engineers with great attitude is the key to make such a change.
Even with automation you still won’t cover all the use cases. And you still will have to add developers redundancy just to mitigate dependency risk.
Difference is in the tech debt and no one really willing to take it on cas that means you aren't needed....
There is a big difference between can run and do everything else big techs do. Sure, whatsapp has been run by 35 engineers for years, but the product is pretty much the same it was 6 years ago. No new features, no revenue, not much really going on other than keeping servers running. Big techs become bloated because they are running thousands of experiments, features and a bunch of shit, but that's how the Gmails, Maps, and all other big things were born.
How do companies like JetBrains and the company behind Telegram roll out great products with such small teams
JetBrains has more than 2,000 employees, not that small tbh. $500m in revenue at 2000 employees is about $250k/employee vs Google's $500k/employee. So by this measure, JetBrains is twice as bloated as Google. I know it isn't the perfect measure, but still something to consider

Cyber truck killer: Chinese version of EV truck
Instagram was run by 10 people before they sold to FB. And it was a better product back then too.
was making 0$
Whatsapp still makes 0$ from customer directly.
