Just curious if Dev managers at Facebook code? If so what percentage of their job? What does the work of dev manager at Facebook usually look like?
I've seen lots of both. My first manager wrote a ton of code and even was part of our grueling oncall rotation while managing 8 ppl. My current manager doesn't write any code but has a lot more people responsibilities.
I thought fb doesn’t have on call because there are SREs
I know directors that code a little too. Pretty crazy. As has already been said, depends on what org you end up in and how big the team is. Coding has a nice upside as you know the pain of the team, what slows them down and you can pitch in during a crunch.
My manager still writes a ton of code. But I work in Core Systems. I’ve been told that managers at Facebook mostly have discretion to be as technical or non-technical as they want, modulo their given people responsibilities.
