Software Engineering at Google UK

Hi guys, Just wonder if Google recruits Software Engineer roles (L4, L5) with Python and C++ skills (especially Python) in the UK. What I can see from Google Career are Android-related roles with required Java experience. Do they actually just need Java SWE and not recruit other skills like Python? Thanks #google #softwareengineer #python

You can learn Java after joining. Just apply.

Do you mean just applying for roles like this one? https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/114622840977662662/ Even if I don't match minimum requirements? Experience programming in Java. Experience with the Android platform and ecosystem.

Don’t they expect Android knowledge for Android positions?

I’m US based and I am not involved in hiring but what I can say is that Google is a big company playing in lots or areas. So yes almost any tech you can think of is in use to some degree. That said not many products are Python based so finding a good role like that is going to be harder. Generally Python is used for internal tools, machine learning and YouTube. C++ is a different story. C++ is used in lots of areas and you would probably find it easier to find an interesting role. The last thing I would add is that within Google we make use of a lot of custom tech / libraries so even if you found an interesting Python role you would probably be writing code that is quite different from what you are writing today.

Thanks for the info! It's actually very difficult to find a SWE role (L4, L5) in London that requires at least Python. I've checked for a while and couldn't see it. I mean I'm happy to learn new skills (like Java) that work requires but the job descriptions actually make me hesitated. Do you think I just apply for any SWE role (e.g Android one)? Will that work?

Go for it! The stuff they ask at interview is mostly language agnostic. Python is super popular for interviews because it’s fast and concise. You could land a Java role without ever writing a line of Java. Good engineers with good foundations should be able to pick up a language fairly quickly, and it’s very common at Google.

You can dm for a referral

That would be great! I guess Referral can help me pass CV and Phone screenings? But what happen after that? I can choose to use Python for other interviews?
