Hello guys, I am currently in the process of deciding if Canada is worth relocating to if I don’t get selected for next year is H1B. I just have a couple of questions to ask in regards to the pay gap.#engineering #software #swe 1. What’s the current average pay gap for software engineers between Canada and the United States? Has anyone experienced this firsthand? 2. Are there any studies or statistics comparing the tech salary disparities between Canada and the U.S.? 3. How does the cost of living factor into the pay differences for tech roles in Canada vs. the U.S.? 4. Are there specific regions or cities in Canada and the U.S. where the pay gap is particularly pronounced for tech professionals? 5. Beyond just salary, how do other compensation elements (like stock options, bonuses, and benefits) compare between Canada and the U.S. for software engineers?
Instead of asking to write question from ChatGPT, why don’t you ask for the answer itself?
Not first hand but researched this on my own. TC is 30-40% less in Canada. If you compare when converting the salary to one currency then the gap is 50-60% easily and probably more.
Damn lol. Sounds similar to living in a place like San Francisco or Seattle
Also, taxes in Canada would be higher on everything.
From my personal experience, expect 50% pay cut, cost of living is same as that of Bay area. Gas is expensive and car insurance is three times as expensive. Not too me me mention, taxes are higher than if you were in California. So, my friend, be prepared. Only good thing is you have peace of mind, good people and no fear of getting shot in the chest. I am loving it!
There are still shootings and stabbings all the time here. Be careful letting your guard down. Imo the better weather is worth the higher risk of getting shot lol
Ok I was being optimistic, but where I am living, I can go for walk at 10pm without any worries. Oh weather is whole another thing, dreading the winter already..
Canadian here. 1) Average senior level SWE salary in Canadian companies are about $96k USD. 2) US tech giants pay more but about 40-60% less than if you live in the states 3) Cost of living in Canada is way HIGHER than states. Yes you read that right 4) with SWE salaries you pay 50% income tax and then 13% tax on everything you buy if you live in Ontario (12% in BC)
Also Canadian here and I agree with every point. Id move to the US in a heartbeat if I could.
Completely agree and to add to @Improving Enterprises point. Be ready to pay >50% of after tax income as rent and never even imagine buying a house.
This is the usual calculation for same company same position: TC - 70% of US pay Net pay - 50% of US pay Savings - 30% of US savings Move to Canada only if your goal to stay poor and watch the wonderful world of leftist lunacy and handouts.
I hate Canada because of some of the left-wing ideologies. I’m thinking of moving to Dubai if I don’t get selected for the H1B.
1. The pay gap is between 30-40% for big tech 2. Cost of living is similar if you are moving from hcol in the US like CA to hcol in Canada like Toronto/Vancouver. Taxes etc can make you feel you are paying more. Also, real estate is super expensive 3. Weather sucks Overall, there are no positives except for some people who move because of documentation issues like Indians with long GC wait times or those who don’t get picked in the H1B lottery
Total pay gap is not that large (10%). Disposable income gap is where it hurts
Please explain the disposable income part

30 % Less
More like 50% if you factor in weaker CA$ and higher taxes.
