Software engineers are underpaid

Contrary to what some people think, most swe in tech companies are severely underpaid. Yes, even people at recent IPOs. Reading some stories here and anecdotes from friends, most only made a few million in equity while founders are worth billions. 10+ billion in Airbnb’s case. Investors take very little risk and get insane returns. Everyone should be asking for way more equity. The people at the top are getting 10000x more. It’s sad. TC: 450k (peanuts)

Going by your line of thinking, then all employees at companies are underpaid if the founder/executives are making billions while the rest make way less. Nothing special about SWEs only

No, not everyone of course, but if you’re making millions for the company in some way, you’re getting shafted. Only some companies will give large discretionary equity packages for big projects. Everyone else pounds sand with weak refreshers and promos.

In my non-eng job, the work I do leads to millions in revenue for the company... I would say the same of most roles. No accounting? No income. No sales team? No sales. No marketing? No one knows about the product.

Yes. A few millions is 🥜

Go to india. You will like your current salaries.

Tata Consultancy Services delylah Dec 15, 2020

What is this supposed to mean, really? I see a lot of comments like this thrown around here.

Oracle investNow Jan 4, 2021

Not everyone is from India here.

It's supply and demand. If you want to see all the profit for the work you do open your own business. You're only as valuable as the cost it would take to replace you.

General Dynamics BobTBuildr Dec 12, 2020

You are as valuable as people see you as. Perception is more important than actual results unless you are in a position where your results can be easily measured. For most software engineers, that is not the case.

General Dynamics BobTBuildr Dec 12, 2020

I think engineers should all be billionaires... wait... that can't work...

Google Morono🦠 Dec 12, 2020

If it worked in Germany or Zimbabwe, there's no reason it can't work in the US. Everybody can be a billionaire.

Intel pm_all Dec 12, 2020

Just make sure you are not anywhere close to Intel. Ask SWE who work there what underpaid means.

General Dynamics BobTBuildr Dec 12, 2020

I interviewed a PhD engineer from there. He quite because he hated the company without a job lined up.

Intel pm_all Dec 12, 2020

Not surprised.

The founders of Airbnb had a binder full of maxed out credit cards and were on the verge of failing before they got into y-combinator. THAT is the level of risk they took. What risk did you take?

Investment Bank Glinda Dec 13, 2020

Well stated!

Amazon Neverest Jan 8, 2021

They took a high level of risk once then they are rewarded with billions for eternity? Meanwhile SWE take a lot of personal, work, and business risks for a lifetime maybe and got peanuts.
