H-1B workers complain about feeling uncertain that they might be deported if they are laid off and cannot find a job, while US citizens complain that H-1B workers are taking their jobs and driving down wages. There is actually a solution for these problems. We could create a new unlimited work visa that do not expire even if the worker cannot find a job. Instead you pay a hefty fee to renew the visa each year. For example, perhaps it costs 200k per year. Then, we collect these fees to create an universal basic income fund and distribute the earnings to US citizens. This solution has the following advantages: 1. Foreign workers no longer need to worry about deportation as the new visa can be renewed indefinitely even without employers. 2. It does not drive down the wages because many US workers can take the universal basic income and retire, which creates labor shortages and drives wages up. 3. It doesn't take away jobs because after many people retire, there would be labor shortages instead.
Who will pay 200k to renew a visa?
Now, I know why there were layoffs at META
bhai username mast hai
lol, 200k per year?
Canada has open work permit which is similar to what you described but costs very minimal fee
Work visa should not be available for sale by the government.
We need immigration reform
The only problem is 70% of these H1Bs don’t even make $120k. That is the reality of H1B. Pretty sure In & Out managers make more than that. And yet they call themselves best and brightest. So how will they afford $200k? Companies love H1Bs because they are cheap labor and don’t complain. All of that change soon
How did you get a job at Meta if you come up with such silly and illogical ideas?
200k is a bit too much, but say for 25k a year subscription there’s a huge market of people willing to pay for unrestricted ability to live and work.
The problem with this logic is that it assumes you, the H1B tech worker, are at the center of the universe. You’re not. Nobody cares enough to go through the hoops to implement what you propose. The 200k fee is a pittance in the context of the 25 trillion dollar US GDP. The US economy doesn’t need shady 200k fees to institute universal basic income if it really wanted to.

Tech companies to avoid as a white guy?
Dude, there aren't as many immigrants making as much money as you think in this country.
For all the moaning and complaining US citizens do, H1B’s are less than 1% of entire US workforce. Source: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/reports/USCIS%20H-1B%20Authorized%20to%20Work%20Report.pdf
They maybe 1% , but this program gutted established groups and companies.
