I was contacted by a recruiter from this team. I just want to know how special I should feel. What does a special project group do @Apple? Any product you can mention that came from that team?
special project is a big concept, it just something they wanna develop. You won't know it before join in
sometimes it means “projects that never ship because the manager doesn’t get the shit done”. To avoid joining the wrong team, always ask what they shipped in the past and how long ago ;-)
That stands for spg. Used to be iphone but called themselves spg. Currently likely working on car stuff.
You won't know anything before you join. So try to find more about the people you would be working with rather than the project itself.
Sounds interesting :P
SPG works on top secret stuff. You won’t find out anything till you join. But the group itself is not anything extra special. Similar comp and reviews like software
I don't need to be an expensive Apple. Regular apples seem to be doing fine in the market.
I'm currently in a SPG, there are several by the way. It is a good place if you are a niche expert. You can grow pretty quickly. In my case I went from intern to ict4 in 1 and 1/2 half year.
You began an internship in SPG?
Do you have a phd?
Apple usually hires experienced, special talent, not generalists, so look at what you know or some skills you have and you can figure out what they're working on. Then in the interview listen to the questions they ask you and you can definitely figure it out. Or go google or bing the employees later if you catch their names (particularly if they are not common names) and you can figure it out. My product there was a one more thing and they wouldn't tell me, but it was easy to figure out with a little research. They pay well at ICT4+ (over 300k with refreshes, although they don't really tell you about those). Best of luck to you.
I know a lot about Tacos
I'm in SPG. The specifics of the project won't be disclosed, period. But if you're on the fence the recruiter and hiring manager will try to give you as much info as possible to help you decide. We're not the CIA, we (as in Apple) are just protective of the things we create because ultimately our ethos is to surprise and delight. That gets harder and harder to achieve but after being here for a few years I believe it's important. As for feeling special, don't. None of us are special but we do want to create something special and you can be a part of that. Your previous experience might be especially important. Idk really. Give it a shot and give yourself an opportunity to see if you like the team. Interview. Ask questions like how relevant is your previous or current work experience is to the role they're hiring for. What do you have to lose?
I was joking about feeling special, and it is a bit of a pun given que group's name. I want to know if SPG is more like a research group trying to do Academic research in a lab, or is it more like a small group trying to come up with something that may not work under the current business model of the company. Something else?
I think this would be a great question to ask and have answered during an interview. It can really depend on what part of the project you'd be involved with.
If they can’t disclose what they are working on, ask what they built in the past. Joining the wrong team can kill your motivation and relationship with Apple. Some managers, who got their company acquired without job interview, never get the shit done. It is the worst to deal with in this company. Ask questions about the last time they shipped something. If it was 3 years ago, skip their offer. You got to join a team that’s result-oriented.
I always wonder why small companies get acquired, and innovation seems to slow down.
My team was one that was acquired, hadn't shipped anything until after I came, and I feel like we changed the world. These teams can be the best because you're on the ground floor of something possibly great and when you ship and get those press reviews come on, if you put that dent in the universe, you'll see praise heaped upon what you did, in print, and you'll know it was your life's work. If you're not able to do that, and your team fails, maybe you didn't do your life's work. If you don't have that passion, look elsewhere

Don't feel to special, I was contacted too. Something about "World Changer" products.
The job descriptions are incredibly vague. This is why I want to know what kind of products have come from this group in the past
