Is it worth it to spend 200k for an undergrad CS degree when all of the coursework is in coursera/edx and most companies don't need a CS degree. But this doesn't apply to other domains like aerospace engineering, as there are no alternative learning resources, and it's well worth the spend. The school we got admitted is Virginia tech with 1350 sat score. What's the best way to approach undergrad for CS career?
Yes even I don’t understand why is the cs major capped when all of that can be taught in coursera
Is this degree from a no name school or Stanford and the like? Personally wouldn't encourage it. I presume $200k is total cost of attendance. If it's only tuition, absolutely not.
“most companies don’t need a degree?” - my experience has been that most companies won’t even talk to you without a degree.
You should probably mention which college. In any case, consider community college for the first 2 years and transfer to a university after if you want to save money
Updated post. It's Virginia tech
Scholarship and state school. Otherwise 2 years at a CC for generals -> transfer to a better school
Rule of thumb is take a loan amount **at most** the amount of pay you can realistically expect once you graduate in your first year. That would be, optimistically, 140k in a normal market in the US. This is not a normal market. Anything over 100k is huge risk, and even that is too much for my personal risk appetite. Education debt is nigh impossible to get rid of through bankruptcy, and can weigh down your finances for decades.
The degree is worth it but if that’s rly the price, go somewhere cheaper or try getting more financial aid.
Fafsa is 3k :)
I remember a guy paying quarter a mil for doc of pharma .. he was 200K in student loan ( private + govt ) when he turned 30
How much does he make? Is it a bad decision?
He says it paid him coz he didn’t had to do extra courses applying for the masters .. and he was being paid top dollars on his domain .. It depends but I disagree.. I got my masters with 22K debt
Attend wgu instead for CS.
Ha ha, we might take it seriously
Nobody cares where you get your degree. It's just a check mark for HR and get past the pre screening. Save your money.
