Spotify DS offer

700k SEK base + 110k USD incentive (4 year, but grant date is on monthly basis.) for DS in Stockholm. Is this a fair package? In the US and looking to experience Europe a bit. Not sure about the compensation and job market. How is tech life there? #spotify #offer #tech

Tech life is good in Stockholm. Your offer looks pretty good. I received an offer in Stockholm 2 years ago and your offer compares favorably specially given the 110k USD incentive. Several startups. Lots to do though Swedes are generally a more introverted bunch and keep to themselves/ their friend circle. Weather can be beautiful in summer and pretty cold in winter.

Thanks for the detailed answer!! I was debating since the living expense is high too and the salary is way lower than US.

I would certainly go for 1-2 years and make the most of your time in EU. Are you working with Spotify now? How did you land the role in Stockholm

Is this 110 across 4 years ?

Yea but isnā€™t the incentive over 4 years? So more like 100k a year USD?

Careem šŸæļø 007 May 11, 2020

Mind elaborating how that's 180k USD? 700k = ~71k USD no?

How much does Spotify pay for DS in US ? Anybody with an idea ?

Uber allophone OP May 3, 2020

Good question. curious as well

@allophone Summer is a good time to start in Stockholm. Take some language classes (Babbel). Also subscribe to TheLocal.se. If you choose to accept the offer, look up SUP45 in Stockholm - they are one example of a start-up networking culture. Finding apartments for rent can be tricky- use Hemnet to find good options.

@uqbg60 Thanks a ton!! You know so much about Sweden! :)

Tech life is ok here. Social life on the other hand... Iā€™d suggest against moving here alone. On a second thought you are an American (I assume), so you should be fine, Swedes have a hard on for Americans, they secretly want to be like them. That base looks ok for Spotify, high engineer 2 - low senior. Youā€™ll be able to afford renting a small apartment somewhere outside of the city and occasional outdoors dinner. Trains and buses are very good here.

Thanks! Sadly...I am going to move there alone, unfortunately... Single...Sign..

I thought Swedes and Europeans in general were proud of the European way of life and didnā€™t want to be like America

Sony iXgsmg May 12, 2020

OP, what's your YOE and level? Did you take the offer? Congrats on the offer.

Glassdoor mJdv28 May 20, 2020

Arenā€™t you taking a huge pay cut? 700 Sek = 71k usd. Thatā€™s not even a college level graduate tech salary in the middle of nowhere America

He was given an illusion that instead he will be able to enjoy the benefits of life in Sweden. Which are supposed to be many. In my experience means having just enough money for your rent and food monthly, paying everything you have extra to the government, being taxed for anything imaginable and also living among emotionless robots that will nevertheless judge you constantly and always take a chance to moralize you. But itā€™s something you need to experience yourself to understand.

Glassdoor mJdv28 May 20, 2020

So youā€™re saying itā€™s common for people to be in their 30s and only be able to save 10-20k/year?! What is dating and social life like for non white (Americans)?
