Have an offer for senior DS at Spotify NYC but I’m interested in transferring to Product in the longer term. I guess the best strategy is to work hard in the DS role, establish a good relationship with the PM of my team and ask for a gradual transition to that Product team after some time - but could somebody please share more information regarding: - how difficult is it to make such an internal transfer at Spotify? - I know a person who went from senior DS to Associate PM. Is this common? I definitely expect down leveling but I’d have thought to PM not APM - after how long in the DS role could I expect realistically to transfer? 1 year-2 years or faster than that? I wonder whether maybe it’s just not worth it and I should try to get a PM role in a small startup instead (especially because my DS offer is for a team working on a product that doesn’t really excite me). Both paths seem difficult, especially in current market conditions! Any thoughts will he highly appreciated. Thanks in advance! TC: 200k #pm #product #spotify
I made the switch from program manager to product manager. If your goal is to be a PM, I'd definitely evaluate whether you'd be able to get PM experience (unofficially within your DS role) and how to land a PM role sooner (example: leveraging your DS skillset for a ML or analytics platform PM role). There is a risk that you may not be able to get unofficial PM experience/learn the PM skillset in your DS role and if so, the DS role would be counterproductive to your goal of becoming a PM.
Congrats on your offer! Would you mind sharing your offer package and whether you negotiate it or not? I just finished my virtual on-site for a senior role and would love to know the expected range.

Hey as someone who made the transition from DS (L4) to APM (L3) generally there’s a down level involved as you learn the ropes in the new role. There are actually some benefits to consider from a down level- it’s easier to exceed expectations without being thrown the gauntlet of seasoned PM work right away and you can learn via mentorship without too much pressure.
Thank you! May I ask how long you had been in your DS role before making the transition? And do you think it gets more complicated once you’re a senior DS?
I’m early career, so about 2 years before making the transition- it may vary for you depending on where you’re at in your career. One perspective to consider is if long term you really want to PM, over the span of your entire career taking 1 or 2 steps back temporarily won’t mean much if it enables you to take 5 steps forward in the long run.
