Square / CashApp - Product Lead

I see a bunch of job postings for Square and CashApp at the product lead level. What does that actually translate to at Square / CashApp? L6? L7? Also, a lot of them say San Francisco but others say Melbourne or other spots? I thought all companies under Block were remote / globally distributed?

Bad idea… terrible company… notorious for underpaying and downleveling or lowballing candidates. Also they aren’t fully transparent about being remote. Even if they say remote, they have preferred locations they like to hire. Then when you are in that preferred location, they will justify lower pay because you are remote. Horrible interview process and rejected two offers from them in the last year alone - both product data science roles.

That’s helpful, I appreciate it. I have referrals for FAANG but don’t really want to go that route at the moment. Assuming I studied well enough to pass the interview loop.

My understanding is that there is probably decent job security at Block et al right now. I can’t say the same about any FAANG right now other than Apple, but who wants to be onsite 100% of the time? If you want security in an insecure time, you should try interviewing with Block. I know people that really like working there, but the compensation and interview process was too absurd for me personally. I forgot to explicitly answer your question about leveling. I’m not sure what the leveling translates to, but they do try to downlevel pretty often. The recruiter actually did this. Then when i aced the interviews, their offer was an extreme pay cut and wouldn’t reconsider the initial downlevel on the recruiters part because by that point it was on a totally different team. Their offer was a pay cut from the last job i was at even before Meta… they did the exact same thing to me for two slightly different jobs twice: once in 2021 and once this year. To top it all off, the interviews were snooty and weird. They act like they are FAANG but really they are a bunch of clowns. if you’re worried about TC, there are way better places, even in the current climate

Product lead is a wide range, I believe L6 or higher. So the seniority of a particular role depends on what the hiring team is looking for. The company is remote. If you see a US location it’s probably remote eligible but the recruiting system isn’t marking it as such for some reason. If you see an Australia based role that’s probably with Afterpay (a recent acquisition), and might be more of a hard requirement since they’re based in Australia.

Thanks super helpful. I’ve read comp is based on where you’re living basically? Any ideas the TC for MCOL area at L6 or higher?

Yes, comp is based on regional tiers. I’ve heard that L7+ comp is supposed to be the same regardless of region, but have heard from some L7s that’s not always true in practice. Couldn’t say what the TC is for MCOL areas. I’m not at Square anymore, and my knowledge of comp was for HCOL.
