Machine learning, 6 yoe, no PhD, $310k TC. How am I doing?
AFAF Square (L5): $185k base, $520k over 4 years, $0 target bonus, $35k sign-on TC: $350k first year, $315k next 3 years Refreshers: from what I see on Blind, 20%-25% of initial grant over 4 years? Affirm (Senior, L6): $180k base, 2 grants ($240k/3 years, $150k/2 years), $0 target bonus, $20k sign-on TC: $355k first year, $335k 2nd year Refreshers: not sure YOE: 5 Both remote, HCOL Both titles are basically high SWE2/low Senior equivalent I think? - like the work a bit more at Affirm - Affirm vesting is monthly, compared to Square's 1 year initial cliff followed by quarterly vest - AFRM way more volatile than SQ - Affirm has cliff after 2 years, due to one of the initial grants expiring. - benefits are mostly a wash, though Affirm has twice as many company-wide holidays than Square. Can anyone at @square @block @affirm attest to anything? WLB, oncall load, stock upside, morale, raises, promos, refreshers, ... #square #block #affirm #l5 #senior #offer #swe
Congrats on the offer! Mind sharing tips on preparation?
Maybe refreshers can break the tie? Square is likely better there?
updated post
Refreshers at Affirm are absolute trash. Almost no-one stays past their initial vest.
Congrats on the offer. How was the interview? Please share the round of interviews.
SQ: no LC, they seem to gauge you a lot more on your coding style (testing, good variable/function names, ..) and behavioral skills. Also, since it is multi-part questions, better to do a good job on say 3/5 parts than do a shoddy job on 5/5. AFRM: LC-like but they are looking for similar traits to what I mentioned for SQ
Affirm has a wider upside/downside. In two years your RSUs have a higher chance of mooning or crashing compared to Square. If you’re comfortable with a two year cliff, can stand to potentially lose half the value, and have a high risk appetite, I’d do affirm. Square is a cooler company imo but the safer choice.
Affirm doesn’t have a cliff
Even more reason to pick affirm. Thanks for clarifying
What are the refreshes?
updated post
Apparently, affirm prices your RSU at $50/share even if the 90 day trailing average is lower. You could take a substantial TC hit on your first day.
No bonus at Sq?? Really? 😳😳
What team in square? Cash app/crypto yes, other no
Just curious what’s the issue outside of these teams? I’m interviewing with them currently
curious as well, bc other
Congrats. Square is definitely the safer choice as they are have more diversified products like PayPal. In terms of upside/downside, I think the entire fintech sector goes up/down together. Almost all of them are done 70% from their all time highs. If one does well, other typically do well also. That being said, AFRM has better chance of outperforming SQ when the fintech sector rebounds.
Agreed, hard to tell where the floor is for AFRM though. How is morale and attrition right now, especially for those who joined near ATH?
People are unhappy, but by and large we're extremely bullish on the stock, and are okay Ask that moral question again next year if we don't see a 2-3x from it's current price. Might be a very different answer
Congrats on the offers!
