Square Offer Eval

I recently got an offer from Square, I'm in Canada so salaries are obviously lower. The offer is for L4, I was hoping to get L5 but I've been told I can likely be promoted in a years time. Here's the offer breakdown: Salary - 115K CAD RSU - 110K USD (~143K CAD) Standard 4 year vesting (25, 25, 25, 25) Bonus - None Signing - 5K CAD First Year TC 155K CAD Current TC ~200k all cash as a contractor (senior level) YOE 4 Having a hard time deciding if I should take this or continue searching. Pretty big decrease in TC but more potential for career growth. If I were to make it L5 at Square I've been told by the recruiter TC would be somewhere in the low 200k range. I have interview an interview lined up with Snapchat as well where TC is likely higher but will likely be a more difficult interview. There was no LC style questions in my interview at Square only platform specific pair-programming and system design. # #tech #square #offer #canada #career #engineering #software #swe

Did you get competing offers? Can they wait so you can do the Snap interview first?

I do have a competing offer with a upcoming startup in SV for a senior level position (TC for that position can be found in another one of my replies). I'm not really interested in the position since the work is very scrappy R&D. I tried to use it to negotiate but was told they don't take into consideration other offers.

Wow so Square basically doesn’t negotiate salary?

Amazon cniz46 Mar 4, 2021

Just tell your current TC and negotiate. Btw is L4 new grad level?

L3 is new grad

I was actually told that they don't take into consideration current compensation or competing offers which is strange. Maybe it only applies to Canda? Forgot to mention I have another offer with a upcoming startup for a senior position. TC for that offer is 215K (200K salary, 15K in RSU)

I didn’t expect square offer to be this low. This doesn’t even beat my offer with 0 YOE in Canada. Btw you’re interviewing for one of 3 roles in Canada in the Bitmoji team?

Deloitte FYPC86 OP Mar 4, 2021

Ya pretty disappointing after doing a full day of interviews. Yes it is for one of the roles on the Bitmoji team, where are you working where TC is higher than this with 0 YOE?

Square pays more than that in US for L3 and in USD. This is a serious lowball. “I'm in Canada so salaries are obviously lower” -> Canada has to change this attitude. I would accept it for now, set a joining date about couple of months from now and continue interviewing. If you get a better offer you can renege it. I know its unethical but they aren’t being very ethical either. You are not some cheap labour to be taken advantage of. Square L4 median TC in SF is $220k, they should pay at least $CAD 180k in Canada.

In Toronto with HCOL this offer as well as other tech salaries are 🤮

Nokia nok788 Mar 4, 2021

Its all supply and demand... "THEY SHLULD PAY AT LEAST 180K" I dont think they have to...because there are guys who will accept 150k offer as it is... No point in compairing california's salary with canada. Its not equal comparison and no one will ever pay in canada as much as bay area, how mauch people rant over this...few exception always there.

I am in Canada and I would say this salary is normal not low ball with your YOE. base in Canada tops around 150K with high YOE. I have seen similar offers with Shopify. what city are you in may I ask? Toronto I assume?

Deloitte FYPC86 OP Mar 5, 2021

Ya located in Toronto, just sucks that I was able to get an offer from a US startup that was willing to pay around what my current TC is (mentioned in another reply).

Fuze famwegucci Mar 5, 2021

In general Canada pay is much less comparing to US...folks here mostly from US see a Canadian salary immediately thinking low ball. 11-120k base in Toronto is tough..and still not consider a low ball in Toronto too. Though you have RSU, but they are hit and miss, only benefits if SQ stays or up. I am in Ottawa, I have same YOE as you, my TC is 130k I don't have RSU. all cash.

What other avenues do you suggest ?

Did you end up getting the offer?
