Anybody on here a Sales Engineer at Square? Would love to pick your brain for a bit! Specifically about the interview process & sales culture. TC: 180ish #sales #enterprise #se #salesengineer
We have sales engineers?
Guessing they are starting up a stronger B2B presence for enterprise sales. I have my first interview Wednesday so I’ll learn more then
Samsara are you a sales engineer rn? Or you’re just sales
I believe they are called Solutions Engineers
Job posting say sales engineer, but same thing!
Most places solutions engineers are more post sales and sales engineers are pre.
I know the team, sharp folks, selective
For tech phone screen, expect a practical coding question. I got something OOP related
What’s the referral process at Square? Is there one?
Just apply! It’s a different enough role that it doesn’t get blended with other pipelines
Hehe actually I wanted a referral for a Product role
Your job is to be a demo monkey 🐒
Square Sales Eng doesn’t do demos lol
Why would they call it “Sales” Engineering then?
OP - How is samsara for solutions? Is interview process technical and what is expected? Sorry not helping you out with your square question but i am looking to move out
I’m making about 335k right now @ 7yoe in my current presales technical role, 60/40 OTE split salary/commission. Any chance square is even remotely in that neighborhood? Every recruiter for every other company I talk to gives up when we get to talking about comp.
How do you like pre sales work? Hows your WLB?
I’ve been on a few teams. WLB varies. It’s awful on greenfield Select accounts if you give even the smallest modicum of a shit. West region Enterprise digital native accounts are probably the best for work:comp ratio. The customers know what they want, they’re motivated to buy, and they’re the users Google Cloud originally sought to serve. The PMs and Execs have the right relationships to motivate buying, and you get lots of support from the org. In general, avoid orgs that don’t have solid headcount, or orgs that have seen recent leadership turnover. Avoid the smallest customers. Avoid the largest customers if they aren’t billing. Presales is one of those things where either you like it or you don’t. I’ve done post-sales and pre-sales work in my career. I gravitated towards pre-sales because companies really only care about revenue, and thus you get paid a lot better for generating new business than you do retaining or implementing business for which the revenue has already been recognized. I’m not, like, a _people person_ like the archetypical $SALES_DUDE but I’m also not a hermit either. I like that I get to solve practical problems, and I’m a former college athlete so I like the competitiveness and win-oriented aspects.

The man I love hates me because I’m Vietnamese
No but I can answer any questions you might have!
Thank you! I was curious what to expect in the technical portion of the interview for the sales engineer position. The role can differ pretty broadly from Company to company and so does the technical component. Are you familiar with any of the sales engineers there? Also, do you know anybody on the sales team at all? If so, are you aware of the sales culture in terms of WLB? Square is known for great WLB, but engineering culture vs sales culture are often polar opposites. Curious if you have any gauge of culture there?
While the Sales Engineering team works with sales, they are not quota driven roles like the rest of the sales team. So the role shares similar WLB to an engineer team. That said, the Sales team is very transparent with expectations. If you are good at your job, you will work whatever hours/schedule you want. But the best (highest earners / highest regarded) employees balance like 30-40 days off a year with working around the clock when they are not out of office.
