I'm assuming Square takes a percentage of transactions carried out using their terminals. That naturally creates an interest where Square wants customers to pay more, hence the higher tip percentages and calculating tip after tax. And Square is promoting this by allowing (and defaulting) those options on their terminal. Any Square / Block employees want to comment? I think I can't support the unethical behavior of this company and will dump my stocks tmr.
Tipping shouldn't even be a thing. Just fucking pay your employees the correct compensation, if you can't afford it it was never a viable business to begin with. I'd prefer a 20% price increase across the board at these cafes and restaurants than tipping culture. But Square has made it easier than every for companies to not compensate adequately. Next thing you know they'll be asking if we went to contribute a few dollars to the business's rent at the terminal.
(I don’t work on the Square side of things.) The tip settings are set by the business, not Square. they set their own percentages and whether it’s calculated before or after tax. You’re thinking too hard about this.
Its also about selling the product. Marketing to say they can easily ask for tips
