Which company is better to be at as an engineer? Stripe Pros: Faster valuation growth historical. Great APIs, developer good will. Related: better brand name in SV. Translates to easier recruiting. Collison brothers lauded as genius level intellects. Jack Dorsey comes off as derpy in interviews. Potentially better comp at same levels but new RSU policy limits upside. Square Pros: Less fires and less ruby spaghetti code. No mongoDB. Better WLB. Public company so RSUs are liquid. Stripe hasn't announced intent to IPO. More diverse business. On the B2B side they have Square Capital and POS but Stripe has recently launched similar products. Incredibly popular consumer product with cash app that may drive future growth. Cons for both: Margin driven industry; hard to build differentiated offerings. #stripe #square #fintech
Stripe’s new RSU structure sucks.
Why?
RSU policy? 1 year of stripe vs 4 years of square?
Square wins. It has a super popular consumer facing product, huge potential. Plus much better culture — just look at blind review and pulse score. In fact I will be surprised when people still join stripe if they had offer from other top notch companies.
This is my take too. Forgot to mention cash app which I think sets Square apart.
1 year vesting structure is a major downside to stripe. Go with square.
A VC firm like Sequoia Capital doesn’t have $600m just lying somewhere that it can write a check and give to Stripe. I’m sure they must have shaken a lot of branches, broken a lot of piggy banks to get all that money and put it in Stripe. You may ask why? The most plausible explanation is that they want to push back on an IPO. Such late stage, successful companies have never done that and it’s a sign of the fact that they don’t want increased scrutiny at this time. The kind of scrutiny that comes with going public. Sequoia understands this and gathered $600m for it. Either Stripe is going to be huge or going to be in trouble for hiding something. Just my opinion and take it with a grain of salt.
