The man I love hates me because I’m Vietnamese
We have stack ranking and sometimes, I see my colleagues letting in bad candidates so that we have scape goats for next layoff. Is there any advantage of compulsory layoff with stack ranking within teams? This is in one of large big tech company. I used to be in coupang but not now.
Standard practice
isn’t layoff usually not performance based?
ooh can i be a scapegoat :)
Amazon didn’t invent it but certainly scaled it.
Humans (organisms) are gonna adapt to any system (environment) they’re put into. In this case, they’re put into a system which means layoffs will be required. So they adapt and hire low performers so that they themselves will be safe and survive. Just basic human nature. Not sure how the MBAs thought this would go. Tech people are generally smart and know how to work with logic driven systems.
This is Hire to Fire. Microsoft also do it. Come back to Coupang 😊
Is Coupang having a firing quota?
You have described hire to fire.
