Staff Research Scientist (Google) to FB/Instagram Eng Manager

Hi, I got promoted to Staff RS (L6) this Spring and have been managing a team of 3 people as a TLM since Fall 2020. I've found an interesting team in Instagram who is willing to interview me for an Eng Manager position. I love making impact in products and I'm looking to transfer to a more managerial role, thus I contacted this team (I contacted the director of the team). The director talked to a few folks in FB and suggested I interview for SWE Manager - Machine Learning role rather than the TLM role (both based on my interest and their requirements). I have a few questions: (1) Is a move from L6 to M1 reasonable? (On levelsfyi L6 at Google matches to M1 at FB) (2) What should be the comp I should be expecting? My current TC is 530k however this doesn't include my L6 refresh. So I expect this to be around 560k or so (Yes, I hit the cliff when I got promoted so I don't expect a big raise, as already my comp is supposed drop down next year). Thanks! #facebook #instagram #google #engineeringmanager #engineering

You manage 3 people and want to be an M2 senior manager?

VP is more reasonable

M1 is already going to get you much higher than where you are comp-wise, and it’s going to be intense enough. M2 is pretty much out of the question. To the extent that even if they mistake you for someone else and offer you an M2 role you should beg to get downleveled to M1.

Thank you, this is very helpful.

I find it unbelievable that 1 year of management experience for a 3 person team is acceptable for an eng manager role. Maybe FB specific but nowhere I’ve worked would consider candidates with < 3-4 years of management experience.
