Is staff utilization rate measured at your firm and plays a big factor in evaluations? I recall it was in audit but curious whether the measure is still one of the "kpi"s for consultant given the engagements are less recurring in nature. And has the firm's target utilization / threshold been impacted by covid?
Definitely a factor but it sometimes is impossible to beat out people in New York so we just look bad
Hmm never thought about regional difference in utilization but I guess that makes sense. Hopefully the firm takes that into consideration for target.
My specific group has teams in dc ny and oc and we are compared to our peers. So naturally there is more work in the NY office
My employer has started putting people on PIP if they are below a certain percent chargeability and if you can’t get chargeable in a certain number of days you are fired.
Damn that's quite intense honestly.
Accenture has been doing it too. I heard it from a few friends still there.
It is a main factor, but I expect it to be less important given the unusual pandemic situation this year
But will there be money to pay out bonuses if utilization is really bad?
So we don’t get bonuses this year
Your Yearly Utilization rate plays a key factor in consulting for Evaluations. Accenture uses it as a factor to determine your bonus (from HR tool)
Yeah, this is what I have seen at every firm. If utilization is low there is no money to pay bonuses so you can't give people high ratings.
Still a big measure at all of the consulting firms. Thresholds wont change since if utilization is low there wont be money to payout.
I guess that makes sense, the correlation between overall utilization and payout pool.
Utilization is a big factor when going through performance evaluations
Utilization is an important metric in your year end, but it doesn’t tell your whole story. Not everything you do is chargeable to a client, so it’s more about what you have done, how that benefits Deloitte and the ability of your coach to convey that in your year end due diligence. Deloitte places a lot of importance in extra project activities, such as recruiting, building eminence, selling new projects, etc, so if you were below your utilization target but were involved with firm initiatives, you will be ok.

At my previous firm, utilization was the main factor during evaluations
Interesting. For some reason I thought consultants would be not as affected by utilization as do the auditors.
