Started new job. Told on first day that primary location is actually in office 1-2 hour commute away.

Title. Started new job at new company. Originally, the recruiter told me that the team was split between City A and City B and that you could choose either one. I made it clear that I preferred City A, and all paper work (offer letter, relocation, etc) referenced City A. I also moved into an apartment and signed a lease right next to City A’s office. On my first day I discovered the primary location of the role is actually in City B, and that I can occasionally work at City A. The office in City B is an hour if I drive, or 1.5-2 hours if I use public transportation. I feel pretty frustrated at this situation, and I’m not sure what to do. It sounds like I could potential split time between the offices, but I think I would still have to spend 1-3 days a week commuting to City B.

Some recruiters are real scum, they just wanna make a quick buck but deceiving everyone they talk to, sorry for your situation:-/

Find a new job. Tell HR why you are leaving - hopefully they are smart enough to blacklist the recruiter.

I'd love to know who it is. Even with blacklisting the recruiter the offer letter should have come from internal HR. I had a similar City A or City B (opposite sides of the country), but I found out before the on site, and negotiated accordingly.

You can sue them. Check with an employment lawyer

eBay seaBay Dec 18, 2018

You MAY be able to sue them. Depends on what state you're in and what the details are. But stillchill is correct on "check with a lawyer." Any employment lawyer should offer a free phone consultation.

Well. As a good practice do not try the legal route first but as a last resource. If you get there then in most of the cases it won’t become public.

Bring it up with your management, both what you were told and the offer letter. If the recruiter screwed you, maybe they can fix it. If the company screwed you, get out now. It won't be the last time.

I had a recruiter do something like that with me. I accepted the offer and initially complied while I proved myself. After a few months, I did exactly what I wanted. :).

Do others a favor and name the company.

Are you willing to live in city b? Maybe the company would be willing to pay for your lease/moving expenses to get a new apartment.

Uber? Sf/palo alto?

That was my guess too. This post is way too opaque for us to actually be helpful.
