Statistics or Racism
When I saw the lawlessness and rioting today in Union Square, the daily posts of store robberies and attacks on elderly in the AAPI community, the drive by shootings in the freeways, etc largely perpetuated by a certain group of people I can’t help but wonder if we have to be silent just to be PC. I used to wish there was more diversity in tech, but after seeing such countless examples I have to admit how impossible it seems to bridge the gap and whether anything can truly be done. I once volunteered trying to teach coding in Harlem… the students just didn’t have the drive. There is some stat that they are roughly 5% of the population in this region, but commit 45%+ of the crimes. I don’t think people are being racists they just know basic statistics…
Racism is generalization whether or not backed up by stats. It isn't easy to avoid it but decent people try their best. It's about being fair to those who "aren't like that"
I think it's more nuanced than that. It is not racist to say that melatonin correlates with likelihood that someone is convicted of a crime. However one could interpret it as "black people are more likely to be criminals" or that "society disproportionately convicts black people". Both of those statements match the data. However one is a judgement on a group of people and the other is a judgement on the systems we live in. The latter points to measurable differences: the color of one's skin makes them more likely to be stopped by a cop, more likely to serve longer jail time, more likely to have access to fewer public goods.

No one is offended if you say “why are most murderers male? Answer: because men are more violent”
But if you point out that over 50% of murderers are Black males some people will be very offended.
