I'm currently working for a US company remotely from my home country Mexico. I'm hired as a consultant making $150k TC which ends up being about $140k post tax, since there are insane tax reductions the first couple years for people starting out their career. I also recently got promoted and in path to promotion in the next year or two, which I expect to receive another bump. I'm getting FOMO of seeing all my friends who were able to get their return offer (mine got rescinded) working in FAANG's and hanging out in Seattle, but economically speaking I would probably need a TC of at least $210k to match my current salary, taking into account taxes and COL. Over here I spend max $3k a month living extremely lavishly, ie. uber eats every day, buying bottles in clubs, pretty nice apartment. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I'm obviously going to hit a salary ceiling at some point, but it's probably going to take a couple years at least. yoe: 0.5 #finance #remotework
Dude stay in Mexico. You get good salary for lavish life there. Taxes and rent here will destroy your pocket
Lol, send me a referral :-). It is better to be a king in your city than a middle class citizen abroad!
Move to India
Stay in Mexico and enjoy being part of the 1%
Why dont you visit a couple of times to see if you want to be there
I did a summer internship over there and really liked it. I was supposed to go back after I graduated but got the offer rescinded. Mexico is also pretty nice but I've had some ugly experiences with police and cartels.
Not quite, you would need 350K TC in Seattle to live the same way, if not more. Mexico is really cheap, not to mention those “tax benefits” that only cut your pay by 10K, that sounds pretty insane, maybe illegal even, but hey if it works, I wouls stay were you are, main downside is security in Mexico, someone making that much there is basically never a SWE, but Director+ at a big company
Stay in Mexico, make local friends.
150k 140k post tax What the fuck 💀
OP is doing something illegal with taxes no doubt. Not to mention that TC in Mexico is insane, just look up salaries there, they are extremely low, SWE recent grads would be really lucky to even get 30K TC
Nope not illegal. Since I'm a consultant for this company (not FTE, hired by contract), there's a tax regime for new small-medium sized companies which give you a tax rate of 1-10% depending on how much you make. It increases year over year and depending on the amount of money you make.
Are you from Mexico?
Yes
Probably stay it sounds like you got a good setup
Hey compa, is your employer in the US, i would take advantage and live the life, plenty of places to travel to that have great food. If you are missing on friends go visit them, you are still coming up ahead cost of living wise. Without kids you can't ask for a lot more, just keep interviewing if it's feasible, i would assume you were on a TN visa, so it's easy to get as soon as you get an offer Chiapas, Oaxaca Zacatecas plenty of places to visit Also you would need a chunk more of $$ to make up for the cost of living change
Visit Seattle for a couple of weeks first, you may not have any FOMO after that
Yeah you’ll get depressed being in Seattle
