Strange Promo Requirements at Uber?

Hi mates, I’m a software engineer 2 (L4) at Uber Yesterday I had a talk with my manager on promo as I felt I had acquired the necessary skills and knowledge. In terms of accomplishments, my role so far has been to proactively take some semi-done project of someone else and driving it to completion as ppl often seem to leave holes or mark something complete when it’s not really there. Additionally, people from my team dont seem to care about anything mildly different from our job description such as helping a client get acquainted with some product we built or communicating progress with stakeholders. That is again something I take on to bridge the gap. My manager told me I have no chance for promo as the only thing which really matters is me to have taken a large and impactful project and driven it to completion. Having learnt that and thinking it over, I think that I now understand why no one wants to do the things I do - it’s necessary but won’t get you promoted. As long as you’re not a total jackass with clients and mildly seem responsible for chores, you’re good. I cant help but think that this leads to a very toxic culture I’ve described but I don’t have experience from other FAANG companies and Im curious - is the process similar on your end? Do you get evaluated for skills and ownership or is it similarly all about a big bang project you have to laser focus on?

Yes, unfortunately this type of promo process results in people taking major shortcuts and hiding them from management. It’s very common at FB.

Yes. True for most companies.

We have collaboration and citizenship in perf right? You should claim credits there? Usually I’ll document those in some format and later embedded into impact resume. To kill toxic, the key is transparency. you might need a bigger project for promo. Your manager should help you find one instead of just giving you other’s unfinished work
