Study finds Silicon Valley hiring biased against Asian, Hispanic, and Black candidates, in favor of women, all else equal. - “When controlling for other attributes, women are 9-10% more likely to receive a callback than men; Black/Hispanic/Asian applicants 8-13% less likely to receive a callback compared to White applicants. Those outcome gaps continue to the interview and offer.” - These efforts do not seem to categorically benefit all minorities equally: women seem to benefit from these efforts across all types of jobs, whereas only highly-qualified racial minorities seem to benefit from these efforts. Other factors: - Referral: 8x - Working at a competitor: 2.3x - Attending a top 10 school: 2x - Women are also likelier to get a callback when "high-quality" (at least one of the above 3 factors) at +18% more than men. I’m not surprised by the outcome of who is getting calls back, but an interesting point I’ve brought up on Blind before is how favored companies are to referrals. I guess it’s an easy way to filter but I feel very few referrals are true referrals in that a current employee personally knows the referee and would personally vouch for him/her with his/her reputation on the line
It's a game really. Companies get big enough where they don't have the time to check everything
Not surprising at all
Silicon Valley is probably more liberal and progressive versus the broader US. This study is basically the sun rose, white people still dominate, being female in modern society gets you a competitive advantage because of humanity’s history.
