Sorry for those who were impacted by Stripe layoffs. I am in the same boat but with a different startup. I saw that Stripe is providing Immigration support for those who are on a visa. Can any of you please elaborate on what that means? I am trying to reach out to the HR team at the former employer to check if they could keep me on the payroll instead of a severance. We have extensive dedicated support lined up for those of you here on visas (you’ll receive an email setting up a consultation within a few hours), and we’ll be supporting transitions to non-employment visas wherever we can. #layoffs #stripe
That’s good. It means priority job placement for affected L-1 & H-1
So people on visa gets preferences over a Citizen?
No
I have gone through such immigration support for laid off people. It’s basically a zoom call with a non affiliated immigration attorney who will answer any questions u have. After that it’s $700 per hour if u want to continue talking. U can ask about ur options like transferring to h4 f1 b1 but no employer questions that only ur hr can answer
Thanks for the information. It is not as useful as it sounds then
It is useful if ur looking for a immigrantjom attorney to answer ur questions
Ex employee: how do non-immigrant visa? Immigration consular: 🤙
Stripe would pay all fees for converting to non immigrant visa ( B2 or H4) for entire family so that they can stay in the US longer and look for a job. Or flight tickets back to home country if that’s my preference. Personally I have asked if they can keep me in payroll for 2 or 3 more months instead of paying same amount as severance. Waiting for their response. Hope they make it work.
Thanks for sharing that. Looking at the twitter thread, I went into a rabbit hole and started researching about WARN act. It looks like companies need to give 60 day notice or it’s violation of federal law. I am actually considering to reaching out to a lawyer to see if that’s the case.
Any updates on this? Would really love to know!
It is a stretch to imagine that this support will be anything but cursory consultation about what your status will be after the layoff and what basic options you have. They won’t do something drastic like keeping you on payroll unless it was pre decided.
