TC220 YOE4.5 Recently had a phone interview and the interviewer mentioned that Stripe is moving away from Ruby to Java; didn't have the time to ask why; Can someone from Stripe explain why they made this decision? #tech #stripe
Email them and ask why the transition.
Email your recruiter and ask for a follow up with someone on the team if you’re interested to ask more questions.
do you know why? just looking for a 1 tldr explanation
Ruby development sucks, that's why.
But why Java? I'm a Java dev btw;
Hired too many engs from Google
Ruby is shite, tools are shite. If you never left the Stripe HQ you'd probably be surprised the year is 2022 if all you ever saw was our codebase
At least it’s 21st century tech unlike other companies
They don’t use Rails
Is Ruby a “thing” in software development? Is Rails even being used to build real products anymore?
github and shopify, it’s also still the best prototyping framework so many startups use it, not everyone operates at FAANG scale nor can they pay for a lot of engineers
Performance. Ruby stack is not multithreaded. Monolithic Ruby code base is being broken into Java services.
how come they chose Java tho? I would’ve imagined they would pick Go
Already have been using Scala for data pipelines and other systems for many years. JVM language was preferred. Go is widely used by infra teams.

Probably easier to find Java devs, i don’t see a benefit besides that if they’re doing rewrites
