I have embedded software expertise with almost 6 years of experience in various role. For the past 2 years approx, I am doing a customer facing role typically dealing with base hardware platform issues. I feel like I have boxed myself in to this role and it is becoming harder to pivot myself into a development job. I am almost 32. I am an expat in Europe and pay was a factor in taking this job. I am finding the current market situation hostile to make any pivot especially considering the expat status. What advice would you give drawing from your experience? PS: I have been some leetcode and other activities (open source, side projects) on the side however it feels like it does not add much value in screening with competitive job market.
If you’re looking to switch to a less customer facing role I would check out some hardware roles like a systems engineer, solutions engineer, or product manager. That way you can use you experience working with customers to drive product requirements. If you are looking to make a hard switch to something completely different I would try to leave out parts of your resume that you don’t want to be doing when applying for a new job. Good luck!
Thanks for the suggestion. With the current responsibilities it seems that something like system engineering could be a good fit. One problem I see is that knowledge acquired in learning system at one company/domain might not be relevant for others so imo it could lead to limited transferable skills.

Leetcode is needed for embedded folks?
Not really however there are some data structures such aslinked lists, array, pointers, matrix and perhaps binary tree might be relevant. I don’t think graphs, dp etc are relevant.
