Crossed a line with my boss
What is the ideal time in between jobs given I have enough PTO payout to avoid financial gaps in salary. There’s a trade off between getting too bored and having your employer wait versus being too burn out for the next job.
It depends on what you’ll do with your time during that period… It’s the best vacation you can have because you don’t have to think about the old job, you have a new job lined up so that worry is non-existent, and you don’t have any work to worry about yet for the new job. But, if you just plan to sit around doing nothing, you could end up being bored after even one day. On the other hand, if you plan a vacation to some far-flung locale, two weeks might not be enough. Since you mention the PTO payout as a financial consideration, I don’t get the feeling that you want to spend a zillion bucks on a super fancy vacation. So, two two weeks off to go on a vacation somewhere, even if it’s just a road trip a couple hundred miles away. Be creative, but (a) definitely take time off, and (b) treat it like a real vacation and not a pause between jobs.
Excellent advice! Thanks so much!!
Don't forget about healthcare. You'll need a job before the end of the month you quit unless you want to pay out of pocket.
I’d rather take as much vacation time as I need and apply for COBRA retroactively if I end up needing insurance.
