Speak to PMs @ Salesforce who recently made the switch v
Work with your product management team and keep your manager in the loop. See if you can shadow someone and get some small projects; attend customer calls. MBA won’t help much anyway if you plan to stay at Salesforce. I have seen a few folks leave as they couldn’t transition internally. They were able to find opportunities outside (MBA helped). A lot of engineers are trying to switch to engineering management or product management, so you need to put in some effort and stand out.
I switched within Salesforce from Engineering to PM. Keep your manager in the loop - that line is dependent on how competent your manager is. I had a great one who partnered to help me find the new opportunity, but I’ve seen others who stopped investing/being interested in an IC once they learnt that the IC wanted to be a PM.
It also depends on the team and what a hiring manager is looking for. I think it’s easier for an engineer to make the switch if you are on teams such as platform, infra etc. requiring more technical expertise. In general, once you figure out what they want, you can work on closing those gaps.
