So I have been seeing how SWE are making crazy money. Like I gotta work 2 jobs to make what they make at entry level. I’m a Data analyst what I do 80% of the time is SQL. And the rest is spread across Tableau, Data modeling and ETL. For the self taught SWE what’s the best way to start a switch over to that space? Any resources I should be looking at and if this is a good idea. TC for both jobs $277k(not including bonus or benefits just the salary) 6 years experience.
The easiest switch would be within your own company. Ask if they can give you SWE bugs to take on so you can transition internally.
Thank you. I will explore this option as well.
Your total salary is already much higher than most SWE with 6 yoe. A large portion of the seemingly high SWE compensation is made up of stocks, which is the benefit you only get at top tier tech. Don’t be fooled by survivorship bias.
I think op’s tc is from working 2 jobs though?
OP didn’t complain about working two jobs, only wanted higher salary. Most tech jobs don’t have that high of a base salary for OP’s yoe
