I started my career with 3 years of SWE experience at GS and USAA. I made the switch to DE 3 years ago and worked at healthcare startup and I’m an IC4 currently at Facebook. I have been wanting to switch to ML and return to SWE as I had more fun working on full stack. I don’t have any formal education background in ML. Did my undergrad in CS. I’m thinking of teaching myself ML through coursera/MIT opencourse over the next year before I apply for SWE. Considering my experience, what level could I possible get? Is e5 ( google eq) possible when I apply and ace the interviews? TC: 280k YOE: 3 SWE followed by 3 DE #engineering #software #switch #career
What is your experience of DE at FB? have you worked on implementing Data Pipelines using any Big Data Technologies such as spark or just writing some SQL coding? If you have written some sizable coding in java or spark, you can start applying Big data Engineers in other companies where you will be considered same as SWE. I guess in FB also you can move from DE-> SWE did you explore that path?
Used python at FB for about 20% of work mainly integrating loggers into the product. If I make the move at FB, there’s a good chance that I’ll be demoted to a lower level.
Previously, as a data engineer at startups and at GS, I worked on creating java web app to integrate spark processing with front end data updates
New hire for analytics DE. follow up on question, do you mind sharing which team you are on and it uses loggers? I heard many teams only do sql metrics and dashboard

Uh oh: President Trump leads Biden 49% to 43% in a two-way race.
Try ML infra, maybe?. It might be better aligned with your skillset. Aiming for L5 at big tech without much relevant exp can be difficult at your desired level but still doable. Maybe get hired at general SWE than internal transfer?
