I want to switch to SW. I have started preparing recently (still a long way to go) but I am not sure what are the visa implications of this. H1B is a specialist visa and my speciality has been VLSI. Also I do don't have much coding experience. So is it worth trying ? I don't want to get stuck in H1B transfer process after putting so much effort. TC:180k YoE: 5y

Have you taken some programing or other cs courses in school? H1B transfer might go through RFE. You need to have courses or letter from profs or ex-managers to vouch for soft skills for PERM.
I do have some C/C++ and Comp Arch courses. Nothing for Data structures and Algos or any other topics.
