I am joining as senior data analyst at EA although have more interest towards data scientist role.Is it eventually possible to move to a data scientist role in Global Analytics and Insight at EA ? Is team change a very rare thing or quite normal? Any insight will be much appreciated.
Almost impossible. They will not consider you. What you need to do is join some small company as junior data scientist, get a few years of experience then eventually apply to bigger company later down the road
Thanks for the reply. I have 4 years of data analyst experience. Have used SQL, HQL, R and Tableau extensively. Also, have worked on statistical techniques like regression, AB testing, segmentation , bit of text mining etc. Will it be still impossible?
I’ve not seen anyone successfully transition from data analyst to data scientist. A lot of it has to do with data scientist requirement for a PhD.
Can’t speak to EA in particular, but this is definitely possible in general
EA is very supportive of their employees' career goals in my experience.
I don't really interact with data scientists, but the ones I am aware of at EA are anti-fraud or under a game team. Another thing is that at times titles are fudged a bit to accommodate pay raises, so there could be some variance in what the title means in different areas of the company.
Within Global Analytics and Insights it's possible to change teams after some time. You need to be qualified (DS team is extremely talented / degreed) but talk to your manager about your career goals (wait a while though, not like day 1 when can I switch).
Also from EA here and we work with GAI quite a lot. Overall I would say it’s not hard to get into GAI, especially if you’ve had data experience. Though for the data science team in particularly, they mostly have PhD degrees (some with more than one). However, I have seen a friend who was an analyst at Lyft and now is a Data Scientist after 5 years Not sure whether you’ve joined already but PM me if you want to chat or want me to introduce someone from GAI for you.
I've worked extensively with GAI, and have even switched roles myself within EA. I have seen EA to be pretty flexible about letting you choose which path you wish to pursue, as long as you are able to convince them of transferable skills, and how you add value in the new role. I have had an MBA friend join GAI as a data scientist, and he didn't have a PhD. Having said that, you WILL find a lot of PhDs in the role of a data scientist, but it's not exclusive.
I work quite a bit with people from GAI Data Science as well as WWCE Data Science. I know GAI is hiring because they wanted me to transfer but I didn’t wanna move out there (EA doesn’t have good CoL adjustment) PM me if interested in referral
Thanks for the reply. I will DM for any further help.
Good question. I would love to hear back as well
